I need more torgue . . . help!!!

So I was at the track a few weeks ago. I just love the way my car was handling around the turns, but coming into the straight-away that was a different story. Anybody have suggestions on what I can modify to help me get more pull around the exit of the corner. Thanks in advance

Probably the easiest way is to get some racing wheels like those from Diamond Racing. A lot of 1st gen guys use 13/8 rims with very low profile racing tires. This effectively lowers the center of gravity, and reduces the gear ratio for quicker acceleration. This might be an option for you if you are not using all of your gearing currently...

In keeping with that line of thought - increasing your differential ratio will give you more torque at the expense of having to make more shifts.

What car are you running and what's your rear end ratio?

Thanks for the replys.

I currently have a set of Circle Alum. racing rims (13 x 8) with Toyo RA1's. As for my gear ratio, I do not know because I bought this car off a second party. My car is a '83 FB with a 12a motor

What exhaust system is the car running? Depending on what headers are on the car, there maybe something to gain there.

What are you running for carb? The Sterling carb and RB exhaust went on at the same time on my car, and made a hell of a difference. The way he tunes the carb really helps with the way it runs at low rpms, and the way it flows helps at high end.

What size tires are you running on those 13x8s?

What you need is to raise your operating rpm's and keep torque the same. This is how you raise your hp which will increase your accelleration.

The only way you are going to get the power you yearn for is to port your motor, and support it with the induction (weber carby or twin 55mm efi throttle bodies), exhaust (headers and freeflowing system), lightweight flywheel, lower gearing (around 4.444 or 4.875).

Are you having trouble turning in or you just don't have any ***** coming out of the hole? What tracks are your running? If your running flat tracks I would suggest a 5.12 ratio.... hilly... 4.44. The 5.12 you will have to buy from Mazda Comp... However the 4.44 came in our cars.

You can figure out what ratio you have by pulling the chunk out and dividing the ring by the pinion... That will give you your ratio.

The RA-1's are not the best tire... From our testing they just don't give the grip Hoosiers do...

Like Mahjik jaid... Your exhaust system is something that needs to be right... PM me for advice on that -

Last thing--- Which tranny do you have in your car? Straight or bent shifter?

A close ratio gearbox will make up for a lack or torque - get the rev's up and keep it in the power band.

Hey everyone, I want to thank you all for the help. My work has been super busy so I have been too tired to get on the comp at night. So I am going to try to get to everyone. Here we go . . .

I got the car with the stock intake carb, I know I need to change that as well. That is on my list of purchases for this car.

I am running on 205/60/13, they are brand new and I just started to break them in when I was ont he track a month ago.

I went to run my car at Williow Springs, bc thats the closest track to me that does let people run it every few months. There is one decent size hill, but the most part it is flat. The problem I have been having was getting more ***** to get the car to pull away on teh straight-away. I am not having any problems turning, just coming out of the turn. I read a lot of good reviews about the RA1's, the reason I did not go for the Hoosiers was the cost and that they wear away faster on the track. But thats what I read and heard from others, but I do not disagree that I did hear they have better grip. As for my exhaust, I have a magnaflow exhaust with a high-flow cat. I am still learning the about my car, but looks like it is stock headers. So I know that will help it as well. I think that it is also the straight shifter. Lastely, where is the "chunk" that I can pull out to get my exact gear ration?

I've driven willow several times. It is a horsepower track. The stock 12a with stock intake is a gutless wonder. Get a weber IDA, miata transmission, and 4.444 gears and you'll be a lot happier.

The chunk is the differential, final drive gears, and carrier. It's what the driveshaft bolts up to.

Have you considered an engine transplant or are you racing in a spec class or want to keep it stock or near stock?

I have thought about a motor transplant, but since i picked up the car a few months ago I want to get as much out of this motor as possible and then step up.

I had just went to willow again last week and did find out that this set-up is for more of a track with turns. But yet it was still a good place to practice the turns. I think that I do want to look into some headers and intake really soon.

Willow Springs is a horsepower track.
Buttonwillow is a handeling track, and is much more technical.

Either track you'll have a BLAST.

I think the lower final drive for closer gear ratios and thus higher rpms out of a turn is his best bet. Porting might even reduce low rpm power. An exhaust will help, but that provides most of its gains at high rpms and not much at low rpms. Both would be great once he gets his rpms up, or on the straights.
