BUR9EQ BUR7EQ. i frankly do not recall which is leading and which is trailing at the moment. ordered from mazda shipped from japan (box had japanese not english). Badsvt I havent forgotten about you the clutch on my wifes car went so thats getting my focus and finances :-).
the P/O and Builder ran BUR9EQ only. i dont believe the heat range on 2 plugs would cause such a stark difference but i may be wrong. Also, when i grounded out the plugs it did not seem like a very powerful spark on either coil; though the leading coil sparked much faster and more consistantly.
Would the good Leading coil cover up a failing trailing coil?
-I tested the leading by disconnecting the trailing, car started and ran smoothly.
-I did NOT reverse that test at the time.
-I did confirm no sign of damage or corrosion in either connector to trailing coil.
-I ground out a spare plug (did not want any posibility of fuel/fumes released while cranking)(yes pump was switched off) and tested all Coil leads on same stud.
- leading coil: Fast spark, consistent intensity, rhythm same across outputs
- trailing coil:Slower spark, consistent intensity, was not as rythmic as leading (immediately noticable)
-I contacted Racing Beat and told them the exact condition of the coil wires, they instructed me on disassembling them to inspect and confirmed that there is no reason to believe that the wires have failed or lost efficiency. i was a little surprised they did not try to sell me a new set.

One point - the leading(lower) coil is wasted spark. The trailing(top) coil is not, so it fires at half the rate the of the leading. That's why there are separate coils for each of the trailing plugs.

No cars been on the back burner for the past couple weeks. I think we are going to pick up a wideband setup so i can watch Afr's while tweeking fuel pressures. I'll have the clutch paid off next Thursday so I'll be able grab new coils then.
Hypothetically speaking say one of my secondary injectors is unplugged would it cause this afr and breakup? I say this because the harness plugs for the injectors are a bit haggard.

Contact Chris at lms-efi.com for new injector clips, I have 550(x4) injectors cleaned and tested with the receipt along with a well packaged trailing coil if you need to borrow them

much better
Well today we replaced injector harness connectors, spark plugs and the Trailing Coil and fixed an error on the injector harness. Now she fires right up, idles a bit higher, smells a LOT richer and revs happily at any RPM. Big thanks to everyone that posted and badsvt1 for being so helpful with stock and connections! We will use lms-efi again and may get back to you on those injectors.

I am adding this for posterity! that maybe one day it will help someone else. We believe the cause of this issue was 1 primary injector not plugged in. listen in the video it is Scary-noticeable anywhere near 6k you can hear and see the car shaking violently. if this happens and you have similar behavior in high rpms check your injectors!

Hello again! Tuesday we are going back to Kinetic. We will post the new charts tuesday evening. Hopefully we will be a vast difference and we will be kissing 185(thats my hope). The previous owner never had the car dyno'd so i can only hope for a small improvement over stock power levels. Maybe i am setting myself up for excitement maybe disappointment. Everyone will know both here and the blog. (nfmotorsport.blogspot.com). In other good news we were accepted into Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development and we are on track for a new paint job before winter.

These are the dyno charts from todays session. We pushed her hard and she was smooth as butter. Thank You Everyone Again!!!!
Dave: Oh man that's too bad, we would have enjoyed that. I should have updated sooner. I think it will be a good year next year!! Mike and I need to decide on a ride height that is more or less universal, we will likely be returning to Kinetic for that as well.
a new video coming soon. I will post because you can see and hear the difference !

Rocklobster: Mike at Kinetic said that his dyno reads notoriously low. "I would not be suprised if you made 180 on another dyno," Mike said this after a second gear pull.
Dave: We have a turndown off of the muffler so he could not get the wideband pipe into the exhaust, Mike said he did not trust the read-outs. then for the last couple pulls it was completely dead reading like 7.99 flat.

James Congrats! Glad you got the bugs out and as long as you are happy and it's smooth you can always try to pick up a few more ponies down the road, I'm excited for you, good luck on the track!
