Hello all. I plan on flat towing my SA22C race car to the track next year. I will be disconnecting the driveshaft. Would it matter if I just disconnect the driveshaft at the flange connection (4 bolts) to the read end and strap the driveshaft up and out of the way? I figured that leaving the driveshaft still inserted in the transmission tail housing will prevent the gearbox oil from leaking out. I can easily drill and tap the floor pan to install a couple of anchor eyes for the heavy duty strap that will secure the drive shaft. I will have the towing anchors welded onto the front bumper mount after it has been reinforced. I will delete the spring mounts on the bumper and have the bumper welded solidly. Additionally, I have a set of Diamond wheels with old heat cycled out Toyo RA1s that can be sacrificed for towing. My tow vehicle will be a 2006 Volvo V70 with a towing capacity of 3200 lbs. The race car is around 2280 lbs (legal SCCA weight with fuel and driver). Any thoughts or possible oversight on my part? Thank you.
I am not sure you need to weld up the bumper shocks. Mine still work on my car and I kept them because they can save the front end of your car in a light hit. The steel panel between the head lights can be really hard to find so anything that keeps that salvageable is worth it.
My tow hook is a spring loaded u-bolt that is attached to the face of the bumper. So it pulls against the bumper shocks. Anyway, I have been using it to winch my car on and off of trailers for a bunch of years. Unfortunately, I have also had to have my car flat towed back to the pits a bunch of times using that took hook too.
