Congrats on finishing - that's the goal! What is your teammates' car?

We have a few other strange noises and issues to investigate but for a 16 hour race with a "$500 V8 RX7" I'd say we did pretty good.

gracer7: I saw the "Silver Bullet" first gen RX7 number 911 at the race but didn't get down to talk to them. They finished in 60th place. I was amazed at the number of RX7's that were present and most of them did pretty well. I've got a video that I'll post when I get it edited.

Our teammates raced an orange 2nd gen RX7 powered by a Ford 302. They were running around 2:20 lap times to our 2:30's. Their car is a little better sorted than ours. We had fuel pickup issues so had to pit every hour where they could run 2 hours. Plus they could get 15 gallons of fuel dumped in their car in just a couple minutes where it took us something like 10 minutes to dump in 10 gallons so we were loosing tons of time in the pits. We also had a couple overheating issues which cost us a total of about 45 minutes. Not that I'm complaining... it was all great fun and the team got plenty of track time.

Jim, Nice vid. I watched the first 6 minutes. Good driving, and your car is *FAST.*
Get those fuel issues sorted, and you have a podium finisher for sure.
Any chance you'll be at the LeMons Infineon race in March?

Michael

Seeing this video makes me want to get back on the track. Anyone have a team in California that needs another member let me know. I have lots of 1st gen Rx7 experience and some go fast parts.

Michael... thanks for the comment. I'm not sure we'll be at Infineon... but if we are, the fuel issues will be solved for sure. It also needs a little more handling development to make it turn better... although I decided that "handling" is less important than just straight line speed in the LeMons. For the most part, the corners are so clogged up with cars that I was just rolling through in line and then blasting past on the straight sections.

Brad: You can check out the forums section of the 24 Hours of LeMons web site. Look in the Human Resources forum for teams looking for a driver: http://forums.24hoursoflemons.com/

I forgot about this thread from awhile ago.

My team won the LeMons race in Denver with a 1st gen. We won by like 10 laps.

We also have a 78 malibu with a 350. We are racing Gingerman in April with the malibu.

Our team (racing a first gen) was accepted this week to the LeMons 26-27 March 2011 "Sears Pointless" race at Infineon. We are going with a vintage LeMans theme this time: http://sites.google.com/site/leftoverpartsracing/

Hey mschiap... I guess I'll see you at Infineon... our team "Hit and run 2" is on the roster with our V8 2nd gen. I'll be bringing in my son down from Seattle as a ringer driver this time.
I noticed a cheap 1st gen aero body kit on the sfbay craigslist... although I don't know why you'd want to go to all the trouble of installing it just to get it ripped off by some novice driver by lap 3!

wvumtnbkr: Congrats on your win! That's no small task especially in a stockish 1st gen.

See ya there,
Jim

Sears Pointless is just around the corner. We rebuilt our tranny and the ancient pickup truck V8 still seems to be ok... Word has it they're going to crack down on silly issues like roll cages actually being high enough to protect the driver and stuff like that so we repositioned our seat, belts and shoulder belt bar to actually meet their rules. I have to admit I didn't like racing with my helmet resting against the roof panel of the car!

Ah so Sears Pointless 2011 has come and gone now. We finished no problem! Our only issue through two days of racing was picking up a plastic trash bag on our grill opening causing some high temps. We finished 31 out of 173 and 30 laps down to the leader. We ran as high as 21st and our best time was 2:17. The car is an '88 Turbo II with Chevy 350 power. A thursty power plant for sure... it was sucking down an 18 gallon tank of fuel in about 1.5 hours... we burned 105 gallons of gas in the two days of racing.

CA Lemons Buttonwillow 2010 12A MG Midget

Hey guys here's some pics of our Lemons Car last year! we ran a 12A 1961 MG Midget.
Day one Practice (9 laps in) Trans get stuck in 3rd, then locks up: shift fork broken. scramble to find new trans. Get one at 5 am and get onto the track after the race had been running for 10 minutes.

6 Laps Later: Clutch Blows Up

4 Hours Later: New clutch In

Next day (10 Laps into the day): Rookie driver locks up brakes hitscar in front crunches radiator find new radiator put it in with No hood

Next driver goes out runs 15 laps...rear wheel stud breaks, slides into sandpit

car is garbage the rest of the race after rear end gets mangled
we Ended up running 42 laps total, pulled the engine twice.

This year were running an 85 GSL with a Holley carbed 13b.
Se ya out there.

Soooo... you must have been the guys asking me if we had a 12a transmission. Too bad you had so many issues. It seems to me like that rotorized Midget would be a rocketship if you could get it sorted out.
Our next race will be at Thunderhill this fall.

Yeah i was runnin all over the place and everyone was so helpful. I remember your car pretty well. The rx7s out there that weekend inspired us to go with a car that was meant to have a rotary in it.
By the end of the weekend, the 12a was running well, but the crappy MG lever arm shocks and other suspension components started to show themselves.

That said, that MG was honest to God only $478 after everything. We know better this time

EVPERK is my teammate too...hes homo so lookout.

I'm thinking I better avoid the showers when either one of you is around....
But yeah... if you just look around the pits it's pretty obvious that the $500 limit is getting stretched pretty far. I supose it's an art making all those quality new race parts look like they've been sitting in somebody's back yard for 20 years.
The aspect that I like most about the LeMons organization is they celebrate the home built hobbiest crowd. The wilder and crazier the idea, the more they love it...

We're ready to go for the Thunderhill **** Sweat-a-paloza this weekend. We mostly did lots of tinkering on the cooling. We stuck the original RX7 oil cooler back in and supersized the opening in the bumper cover to let as much air in as possible, upgraded the air box to minimize air leaks to the radiator. Cleaned up the inlets to the brake coolers. Also added a couple interior blowers for the driver. Other than that it's pretty much the same 88 T-II/Chevy V8 heap as last time. We also picked up a spare rear subframe and rear end because we really needed to haul a few more scrap parts that we'll never use...

Jimeby, good luck at THill!

Jimeby or RXLemons - Any chance you'll be at the Fontana Chumpcar race in October?

Our team's next race is the Chumpcar national championship Labor Day weekend in Iowa. Any RX7 people who are there, stop by and say hi!

Hi Michael... Thanks for the props. And good luck to you. We won't be at the Chumps event. Our next planned event is Button Willow in December.

Now for the good news!!! Overall we ran 264 laps for 49th place out of 112! Our best lap time was 2:25.660 and we were on track for 15 hours 57 min. Our other team car finished 5th with a best time of 2:17.124.
Our car is an 88 TII with a 350 chevy. About 2 hours into the first day we lost 5th gear so ran most of Saturday with a top speed of around 70... so we got passed alot. Sat night we pulled the trans and found the 5th gear broke a snap ring and slid off the splined portion of the output shaft. So we hammered it back in place and welded the **** out of it. Then slapped it back together and it actually held together for all but the last half hour of the race... much better than I expected.

In other RX7 news, there was a first gen with what sounded like a very warmed over 12A (the "correct" motor) that was very impressive and seemed pretty reliable. But I didn't notice any other RX7s. This was an abusive race with the very high temps so the car count was way down from what I'm used to.

^^^ If we weren't running October 1st and 2nd in Houston - I'd seriously consider it.

This should be our 11th (or 12th?) race. We've already won Index of Effluency - now for overall laps.

Who said a Turbo Rotary couldn't run an endurance race?
