Dedicated Lemons/Chumpcar Thread

I just created this thread for discussion about the groups that are putting together fine rotary-powered (or other) vehicles for the 24-Hours of Lemons race series.

So have at it!

ArmitageGVR4 01-14-10 09:41 AM

Here's our fine machine at last year's full 24 hour, The Lamest Day at Nelson Ledges:

http://armitage.crinkle.net/gallery/...lson.sized.jpg

We're kicking off this season at Southern Discomfort at CMP in 3 weeks.

Not sure about the Summit Point event yet. I have concerns since a Lemons event by itself generally overwhelms all the facilities at a given track (100+ teams, each with 6-8 drivers/crew all driving their own cars, tow rigs, race cars, RVs, spectators, etc.) and they're scheduling the event the same weekend as Hyperfest which by itself already overwhelms Summit with NASA racing+hpde, US Drift, arrive-and-drive karting, BSR related stuff (hyperdrives/shotgun drives), an SCCA RallyX, and thousands of spectators. That and the Shenandoah paddock just isn't that big.

Makes me wonder if they'll run an abbreviated field for this event. Better get those registrations in early! I'm still on the fence though, because it *is* my home course and I know Shen better than any track.

^^ Nice machine, I've just picked up a 1986 BMW 535i! It's quite the rust bucket and heap, but runs well and only have 145k miles. Where did you get he cage done? I'd do a Piper cage but as you know he aint cheap.

Brent Dalton 01-14-10 10:12 AM

It's looking like I'll be driving on a V8 Mustang Team at CMP in a couple of weeks. What are you using for suit and all your safety gear(excluding helmet of course as I already have one)?

The cage came from a donor ice racing car. Basically the roof was chopped off, cage dropped in, and the roof was welded back on :) It's worth a look to see if Autopower, Kirk or the like make full cages for the 535 but that doesn't seem super likely. The good news is these days you can make the car last a long time (7 events and counting for the SAAB) so the cost of good safety gear does get spread out.

Awesome, then I'll see you there. V8 mustang sounds like a lot of fun to drive against an endless sea of fwd 4 bangers ;) Since we're in the off-season you can take advantage of big discounts on last season's safety equipment lines on blowout prices.

Lemons also has a deal with Pyrotect for "dirt cheap" safety gear.

I picked up a Sparco 3.2/A5 suit a few years back for like 1/2 price in a similar sale at OG Racing. Per the Lemons rules, if you get a multi-layer suit of that rating you don't need nomex underwear.

Our team has raced three events and plan to race 5 more nearby events this year.

Colder than air intake. Its piped to a Window AC unit on the roof. Runs off a generator in the back. :icon_tup:

That's what I figured. I was planning on getting my suit and what not later in the year, but I guess I'll get to go ahead and drop the change on it now and just get the one I want for long term opposed to something to hold me over. *Add's another thing to my long long list*

That's crazy! Does the A/C unit provide enough cooling for the volume of air being drawn into the motor? Does it compensate for the additional weight of the generator/AC unit? Or is it all just for fun ;)

stevensimon 01-14-10 11:42 AM

here is the car we are working with. its a non intercooled flatside starion and we know basically nothing about the car but are determined to kick a**.

In a straight line , we were as fast as the fastest cars on the track (maybe even the fastest) and we were faster than every RX7 there even with 200 or 300 pounds of extra shit on the car.

In the turns, we were running the stock open diff and couldn't plant the power we were producing on the ground. Seriously.

Of course we had other secret weapons... :)

ArmitageGVR4 01-14-10 11:53 AM

Starions are cool. One with a 4g63-T swap would be even cooler ;P

As far as a theme, I don't have any ideas off the top of my head but just entering that car is going to get you a nod from the judges over all the miatas, e30s, etc. that show up. Partly because it's a cool old school car but mostly because no Mitsubishi has any prayer of finishing the race without at least one spectacular failure ;)

stevensimon 01-14-10 11:56 AM

haha! i know.. its going to be great

I'm wondering about this event myself. I'm supposed to participate, and my crazy friend wants to drive in the LeMons race AND the NASA race. (We've attended hyperfest every year since like 2003 or 4) I don't know how the logistics of that are going to work, trying to quickly get from one paddock to the other through the crazy hyperfizzle crowds.

Picture of our lemons car, raced in 08 at thunderhill. Still have the car rotting away in my friends backyard. Might race it again this year if we can get a team together.

Just in the interest of full disclosure, I am a tech inspector and a track steward at the Northern California races Any of you cheating ass rotary types will be reported to the LeMons hierarchy immediately.

Or you can PM me and I'll do what I can to get you by the BS judge's.........................................

Only a couple of days away... everyone packed up and ready to go or is everyone burning the midnight oil making those last minute modifications? :D See you guys at CMP. I'll be in a tan mustang. I think the team theme is Clusterplucker Chicken or something, that tells you how much I know about the car...

ArmitageGVR4 02-03-10 03:02 PM

I'll be ready. The car was in pretty good residual shape after the 24 hour at Nelson, though we had to run the last 19 hours of the race with only 5th gear. That was a challenge getting it going from a complete stop on-track! The real challenge isn't fixing what's wrong with it *now*, but what will happen to it over the course of the weekend ;)

Looks like we're in for some weather. Packing warm clothes and rain gear. Nothing worse than being cold and wet all weekend.
