Cluster Choices

I am in a bit of a quandry with my car. General details:

Weight - 2450 W/O Driver (bit of a porker)
H.P. - 200 RWHP
Final Drive - 4:10

Track - Mosport

Boxes - S4 NA Box 1st - 3.475 GSL-SE Cluster 1st - 3.622
2nd - 2.002 2nd - 2.186
3rd - 1.366 3rd - 1.419
4th - 1.000 4th - 1.000

All the gears in the GSL-SE box are lower and will give me better pull in second and third, but the drop into 4th is killer. At Mosport the run onto the longest straight starts in Second, then Third and finally Fourth. The rest of the track has 2 downshifts into Third and back up pretty quickly and then long stretches in Fourth.

I think I can compensate for the 3rd to 4th drop by winding it higher, but .......

Anyone run this cluster before and can give me ideas on how liveable it is? I really like the lower ratios in 2nd and 3rd, its just the drop off that has me worried. I ran it through my Bosch LapSim and it shows almost equal lap times.

I already own both boxes, so thats not an issue. Ideas, thoughts?

My fellow racer at our track has a gsl-se trans behind a race ported 13b for the quick ratios. 5yrs and holing up fine for our track. He runs 5.30's in a solid axle though.

He ran 4.11's this year and he didn't complain. He winds the engine to 8500 so I'm not sure how that plays with your tactics. Our straits with 5.30's he gets into 5th before the end of the track.

He swapped it for a turbo trans once cuz he blew the output shaft seal and couldn't wait to get the se trans back.

Not sure if I helped at all but yeah...

So you are talking at Gimli, right? Is there any pull time in 4th at that track. I seem to recall that it is a tighter track and 2nd and 3rd gear mostly. I pull to just about 9,000, so the drop shouldn't be too bad.

Thanks as this helps,

Eric

Yeah Grimli is my home track.

My turbo trans and 4.11's I'd get to 9k in 4th with a 24.9" diameter tire. The main straight is a bit better than 1/4mi and our two back straights are a little shorter.

I would say that at about 2/3 of our track we are in 4th. but yes, it is a windy switchback style track that is, for me, it's 3rd and 4th with 2nd only being one corner.

the se trans never drops to 2nd on our track with the 23" diameter tire that he runs and 4.11's. But he is lighter than i am and has the power to do it.

Perfect! Great information and as I am using a 23.5" tire it totally is applicable.

Thanks a bunch and it looks like I have a trans swap this winter.
