There is a high pressure area in the center, however the edges and the corners are definitely in a low pressure area. On my '80 you could watch this on the highway, over 75mph the corners of the hood would lift a half inch!
yeah at highway speeds the 1st gen hoods sometimes life up and flutter in the air, its kinda scary when you're 17!

hey man, I ride bmx and this is an old trick when trying to out jump your buddies at the trails. it's good for about 1.6-1.8 lbs on a bmx bike. As far as heat cycles and such on a car, hmmmmm, yeah that wouldn't be too good.

peejay is right. When the hood is unlatched, it raises up about 6 inches, and it changes the airflow across the hood and across the windshield. Pressure graphs of an FC with the hood closed does not apply to an SA or FB with the hood unlatched.

On a stock SA or FB, their is a lot of air pressure in the engine compartment and the hood will raise up if unlatched, AND drag will decrease and top speed will increase about 3 to 5 mph.

On an SA or FB with a full ground hugging race airdam, there is less air pressure under the car and more air pressure on top of the hood than a stock bodied car.

The rear raises up because it's hinged at the front. High speed air over the top of the hood creates a low pressure area above the hood. Hood rises up. Same reason airplanes can fly.

I would guess because the latch isn't in the corners but in the middle...
