Auto X Tires

What do you experienced guys run? What size? I am currently running Stock 16" wheels.

I was deciding between Toyo RA1 and Kumho V710 but I want to run 225/50/16 Fronts and 245/45/16 Rear and V710 don't come in 245/45/16.

The V710 only comes in 25/50/16 as you said but my car still has more grip than it ever did on 245/45/16 Victoracers or Hoosier S03 and S04.

The Toyo RA1 would have the least amount of grip of any Kumho or Hoosier tire.

For the stock wheels run the same size tire front and rear. There's no sense in running a staggered fitment and this way you can rotate all the tires often to get the best wear.

A 245 45 16 will have sharper turn in (shorter sidewall) accelerate faster (smaller diameter) and higher lateral grip (wider footprint) than a 225 50 16. I have not auto crossed since 92 only DE/Instructor and Time trial to date. However, every BMW and Porsche Club Race I attend, is always dominated by Hoosier.

Not if they are two different tires they won't. I've got the data to prove it

What do you mean, brand?? maybe, however, my point was a 245 45 16 Hoosier will be faster than 225 50 16 Hoosier due to my point above...

I agree. But in this case he's not comparing two Hoosiers, he's comparing different tires from different manufacturers.

He's avoiding the V710 because it's only available as a 225/50/16. I can tell him that the 225/50/16 V710 is without doubt much faster than any 245/45/16 Toyo or Hoosier (with the possible exception of the Hoosier S05. Haven't seen those run yet) even though the V710 is narrower.

I never used V710, I've run the older Kumho's, and all the other road race compound's, Hoosier, Goodyear, BFG's, Yoko and Toyo. I'll take your word on it..

if your saying that the V710 is faster than the hoosier so3s and the so4s than something is wrong with your driving techniqe..... i have ran both V 710s N Toyo RA-1s there both a good long lasting tire......BUT the Hoosier S03 N SO4 are 4Secs a lap faster than the V710s N the RA-1s.......and the new SO5 is even better than the last gen of hoosiers.......so if u wanna puts around and not be competative autox then get the V710s or RA-1s they will last longer.....but if u want to be competative then go with the hoosiers.......belive me i was a Nationals Co-driver this past year

My driving technique and that of all the other autox drivers who run and win on the V710 is just fine.

The context of the question per the thread title is "autox". The poster mentions the 245/45/16 Toyo RA-1 and the 225/50/16 Kumho V710. A 225/50/16 V710 will murder a 245/45/16 RA-1 on an autox course. No contest.

Nearly 1000 drivers entered the 2005 Solo2 Nationals. Know how many drivers ran Toyos of any kind? Zero. But hey; maybe all one thousand of those drivers suck and don't know squat about tires.

2005 Solo Nationals results here

Ditto what Damon said. No contest comparing the 710's to S03's, S04's, or RA-1's. The 710 is *the* best DOT-R autox tire there is, and only the S05 is close. I don't know where anyone would get the idea the 710 wasn't the top tire unless it isn't offered in some specific size need.

On the track, the 710 does very well, but since it is a dual purpose tire it may have some trouble with high/sustained heat when compared to a Hoosier road race compound. Many roadracers use the 710 successfully.

The Toyo RA-1 is not really a true autoX tire, they don't build enough heat in an AutoX. If you read about them they say they are really not intended for AutoX because of this. Although that is what I'm going to be using this year, mostly because I want to get a few track days in without having to buy tires after every event, and I don't plan on competing anywhere but local for a few years.

I've never ran the hoosiers but from what I've heard they are the stickiest but also have the shortest life span.

Thanks for the info!! Rumor has it that Kumho may come out with additional sizes. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the 245/45/16.

I will most likely go with the V710 and hope they last 15 events @ 4 runs each. Might be a little far fetched but that's why I considered the RA1

Absolutely no problem unless you're especially hard on tires.

Lori & Brian Robertson came to the first solo2 event this weekend in San Diego with over 200+ runs on their A Stock Corvette, Kumho V710.

Absolutely ditto on the great performance of the V710, best current DOT tire available. I ran them on my GP Porsche 931, loved them....225/50-15 on a 9" wide wheel....also a lot of the Street Prepared guys run the 215/50-13 on a 9" wide wheel, this tire seems to take to wide wheels very very very well.

Anyone on here road racing on 710s? I am interested in whatcar you drive RWHP, basic set up, and tire life/ performance. I may need to go to DOT tires to stay out of the top class in my region. I will try to give up some other points before giving up the slicks, but I may need to. Carl

^ I'm sure you're not interested in what my low hp car does on them Scotty B. White however damn near won T1 at the Runoffs in a Viper on V710's. If they live through that I think your car would be fine.

Everyone gets excellent life from these tires compared to other R compounds. You might try www.sccaforums.com. Lots and lots of guys are road racing on them.
