I would suggest looking at the rules for what ever kind of compitition your going to be taking place in. I think some of the major ones have rules about mounting fuel cells in the rear hatch area/truck. Pretty much mounting it anywhere that shares the same air with the cabin so keep that in mind.

I've used an RCI tank in the back of a 1st gen RX-7. I had to cut up the floor of the hatch to mount it from above, then build a steel box to protect it, with a hatch for access to the filler and holes for the vent and fuel level locations. Tech signed-off on it, so it was good enough for ITE. If I did it again, I would add a filler neck and hose back to the stock filler door, for convenience.

RCI Tank:

The hole:

The steel box:

yeah id really want it to be mounted under the car . NHRA requires their be a protective shield on the bottom to protect the tank that im cool with . i just want to save 20lbs or so with a fuel cell . i wouldnt mind cutting the trunk and mounting it that way but id have to make a cover for the tank and install a filler neck to the stock location .

anyone done it on a 3rd gen?

Mine passed tech at Gainesville, FL...an NHRA owned track. The steel cover is the required bulkead. And, running the filler neck to the stock location is trivial...the neck adapter is a bolt-on.

Probably not. Fuel cells generally require an external pump.

Race Safe has a fuel cell you can use and fits.

Are you only planning to drag race? One from Summit/Jegs would be a lot cheaper if so.

Quite a bit of fabrication for whatever you do.
