AIM GPS Laptimer

Anyone heard anything on these? Looks like a solid, lower cost alternative to Traqmate:

I have not used that one, but I have used the GPS add-on for the AIM dashes and they work very well, other than having to "mark" the start/finish line at the beginning of a weekend.

I love the "no mark" operation—seems really easy. I'd like to know more about the software and quality of track mapping it'll do—but for the price, GPS lap/sector times and display is already a pretty good deal. By the time you get the unit and the display with TraqMate, you're in for $1k.

Do you have a smartphone? You can get "Trackmaster" for android or "Harry's Lap Timer" for iphones and it will do pretty similar stuff. The iphone one is pretty good because you can turn on the video camera and it will do video data overlays and auto syncs them for you. The android one you can plug in a speaker or into a stereo (if your car is not a racecar) and it will broadcast lap times to you.

I ran "Trackmaster" at the same time as my Racepak G2X and the lap times were within tenths of each other. I'm sure the AIM solo is pretty nifty and slots nicely in between a data logger and a regular lap timer but if you just need GPS lap times and not any add on sensors, I found the smartphones are great at about $10 per app. All you would need is a windshield car mount or so. I would also add a small tether to the phone just in case or a backup strap but I didn't use one on my car.

I have tried the smartphone gimmicks and they are at best meh. Smartphones just to not have high enough resolution to accurately produce trackmaps, speeds, etc.

That looks like a SLICK unit.

Really all the weekender needs that is not using a full dash for car vitals and data logging of all aspects is exactly that unit.

Easy to install, and move to other cars. GPS based Records lap times, and most importantly has predictive lap timing. The only thing i wish a unit like that had was a nice bright green and bright red LED. Red if you are slower, green if you are faster than your session best.

Obviously you are giving up some of the features a full logging system will give you (a lot really) but what does the HPDEr really need?

Me three. And you don't need to mark S/F at many tracks any more if you pre-load the track database. And it stores it weekend after weekend, anyway, so it really should have been once per track, anyway, not per weekend.

Only if you have never used an actual laptimer or do not care about accuracy.

Local shop was backordered, otherwise I'd be delivering a first-hand review of it on Tuesday.
