Here is a 1994 White Rx7 Purchased to build a Track car for NASA and SCCA events. I will Post Pics as the progress continues. Any Input or sugestions will be greatly appriciated. I will also be parting out the complete interior along with the OEM Hood and Trunk.

Im doing the same exact thing ( in miami too) with a 92, and all I can say is exepect to double your estimates of how long it will take if you plan on doing a real thorough job. I'm about a year and a half into my project, and still have a few more months to go.

Few advice for you for building a Track only car What class you plan to run. There are big different between A Race CAR and a Time Attack and Solo2 car. Plan ahead how much money you plan to spend. A lot of time I seen a lot of people spend too much money on buying parts, but end out give up the project!!, For me most important thing of RACE CAR or Track car is to drive on Race Track. I think FD, The only class legal in SCCA is. GT-2 or 3 but you cant run turbo in that class, plus there are very little change to against to real GT car(tube frame). there are one class call ITE, this is regional only class, but most of mod is allow in this calss. so in this class you see some very wacky race car or some very very fast one. NASA is about the same thing only unlimit class for Turbo FD. For Solo2 you can build a BP car ? I am not sure is FD is legal or not Time attack car. since time attack is getting popular right now. so it would nice to see FD doing it. As I said before. money money money. how much you want to spend. and Driving on Race track do wear you car a lot !!!!. MY Road RACE FC. was plan to build as Turbo 13BT. but change to EFI 13BPP. and last to 58 IDA 13BPP. |
FD's go into BP for Solo II. I used to run it when I removed one too many things out of the car.

Tips for projects... Make lots and lots of lists Start with very open lists then form them down into more specific lists Schedule time to work on the car 10-6 on saturdays works for me and my buddy Do not get overwhelmed :) Start off small, like alot of guys are saying driving is more fun then turning a wrench. Figure out what you can get done with the time your allowing yourself and tear it down the following season. Seriously the list technique is key..having a game plan before you do things is helpful and crossing things off helps you feel like your getting somewhere |
I would like to know how heavy all that stuff you pulled out is. I am in the process of doing the same to my car. Seats included.

As others have suggested determine which class you plan to race in BEFORE you begin any planning/building.
I race in NASAProRacing TimeTrialUnlimited. My car is a street car that I take to the track about 1x month (hopefully that often this year). If NASA is in your area check them out. There are some 700hp+ 2500lb cars in my class and only a handful of seconds faster. |

Tilton pedals.. Haltech. IDA ITB. Dry sump tank... interesting !!. I guess this would be NA right? Bridge or PP ? GT OR ITE ? oh BTW you would need two of that oil cooler to cool your project car. you oil cooler should aleast cool 1/3 of your engine heat. so in other way. it migh better if your oil cooler size is 1/3 of Radiator. This is how I did on my 13BPP. before I have oil temp too hight problem. And last, you might not want to use OBX harness.... it might look the same. but is hard to tell this thing will hold under accident... so better buy one with FIA or SFI aprove... Here is an update, The Car was finished today, Just as the fabricator Prommised (9 Days). This guy is out of hand with his work. His welds are even and artistic the way he bends the tubing to truly follow the inside contour of the car. I have seen a couple roll cages that have been done. This guys work surpasses them all. A little pricey, but you will get what you pay for. I dont know anyone else that was able to get all this work done in that amount of time. AND it still look this good

One thing I just noticed, SCCA won't allow anything to vent into the passenger compartment. I assume that's the dry sump bottle mounted in back of the passenger seat, vents would need to be run say under the fuel cell or something. I'm a little confused, having never run a car with a dry sump setup, but I thought they were sealed, with no vents????

Those vents will run to the outside of the car with some bulkhead fittings. and the lines for the sumptank will be braided line so yes expensive, but the only way to go at this point. there is no way to fit that tank in the engine comp.
I should be getting the brakes in tom. or wednesday and my next step is to take the car for paint when the hood, hatch and bumper get here. i found this really good frame paint made by por15.com this stuff is awsome and it self levels so i can use this to paint the inside of the driver compartment. havnt decided on a color as of yet. |
Damn! Looks like there wont be any paint involved for now. Went to the body shop and they quoted me 1900.00 to paint the car. No way. car will stay white with primer bumper for now. I ordered 2 quarts of por15 frame paint and i will use this to paint the inside and the roll cage. My next step is to remove the suspension to sand blast and change the bushings to delrin.

Here is the Front Oil Sump Cover by Mazdaspeed. This is some serious race shit here. only way to get this through Mazda North America Operations. This is the same one used in the Mazdaspeed 3 rotor ALMS Prototype car as well as in the CLR Motorsports Race Car (owned by Carlos Lopez)

I figured i would get some shit on the floor. , , LOL anyways its still damaged from when we had the hurricane. been so busy with stuff that i havnt gotten around to it, anyhow, how did you get a 4 gallon tank inside your engine near your headers. I would have tried something of the sort if i had room.

Here is some more stuff that came in today.
the rear Hatch Lexan (Polycarbonate) Weights only 11 pounds together with the CF Hatch thats only 25 pounds together as apposed to 51 pounds for the OEM Hatch and Glass together. Also I found a radiator from someone that had one never used. dual pass and fits perfect and snug. Some of you may have seen this group buy in the GB Section. I Have to say that out of like 4 GB i have participated in... this is by far the best and the smoothest i have ever delt with. Steve is an outstanding guy for his work. here are some pics of the bushings. 18 Total and the fabrication and cutting looks awsome. also are pics of the new bumper and painted engine bay along with an RX3 Bell housing recently purchased.

Suspenssion Arms Now Ready for Install

Here is a pic of the Arms with the new Delrin Bushings Installed. I will be installing these by the end of the week and plan on working on this all day saturday. My plans are to have the car on all 4 wheels by Sunday (Fingers Crossed) then from there i will mount the fuel cell, Oil Sump Tank and then take it back to the Roll Cage Fabricator to take care of some stuff left unfinished. Then i will begin the Plumbing and electrical.

Update !!

As of tonight, the car is in the body shop and getting painted tomorow. Hopefully it will be out of the bodyshop by saturday or Monday. I then plan on droping in the drive line with a dummy engine so i can start running the plumbing and electrical. as a last desicion. i happen to be back and forth between EFI or reverting back to a Webber 51 IDA setup. also i am having problems with the mod of addapting the front FD calipers to the rear. i posted a thread in the forum and any help will be greatly appriciated.

Yesterday they finally shot the car with the paint. I have to say that i was very skeptical if the painter was going to pull it off. and he did. the paint looks awsome with the pearl color. Its the orange from the 05 Lambo Gallardo. Looks awsome.
