I'll probably be doing NASA, Mercedes Benz and possibly SVT club events. My first will be VIR Full the last weekend in March. I may have to check out some of these other clubs you've posted, schedule permitting.

If I go to WGI, it'll prolly be with Trackmasters. I got REAL used to 1 hour sessions, 4-5 times a day!!

Huh, I was just browsing their site and man that looks tempting. Same cost as an HPDE event but 2x the seat time... Question though. I'm not a novice so I don't want to sign up for that group but all the same I've never been to WGI before so I would definately want an instructor riding shotgun for a session or two... Is this do-able or would I have to sign up as a novice for that?

You only get the extended track time if you get checked off for their open track group unfortunately, and that's unlikely the first time out, unless you're experienced... I just got checked off last time out, after 7 days at WGI. They're kind of sticklers.

I'd go hit one of the more lax groups first to get some days in there, and then shoot for a TM checkoff.

I'll add that TM is a great outfit. The check out can be tough! My girlfriend is most likely the biggest hardass ball buster of the instructor group but you will also lean more then with any other group. They take the open track very seriously and it is designed to "weed" out the undesireables. (Can't understand how they let me in?) What's the old joke? I don't want to be part of any club that would accept some one like me as a member... Anyway I'll add that as part of the TM track day you get the service of a dedacated mechanic that knows Mazdas, including a factory type rotory compression tester.

I'd like to suggest some of you check-out COM (formerly Corvettes of Massachusetts - www.comscc.com). Dates of interest include:

Apr 23-24 Watkins Glen
May 28-29 Calabogie (new track outside of Toronto)
Jun 11-12 Mosport
Jul 30-31 Mt Tremblant
Nov 16-17 Lime Rock

This is a great club that runs the 1st day as an HPDE and the second day is split into morning practice sessions and afternoon time trials. The competitive nature of the club results in a wide variety of cars all with the goal of finding the fastest line. Seems like a simple concept, however, it is often not on the list of goals for many clubs.

Anyhow, it would be nice to see some 3rd Gens get back in the game and represent on time trial day.

I'll concur on the quality of instruction at TM. I do think they busted my ***** more than necessary to get in to open track, but I understand why. Part of it for me was that I only get up there once a year, so it always took 2 sessions to blow off the cobwebs (those preceding 7 days spanned about 6 years). This year I watched my in-car video for hours to be sure I had all my turn-in, apex, and track-out points memorized before I got out there. It worked. No cob webs.

Thank god for is dedicated mechanic too... he saved my *** last September. Thanks again Dave.

I'm leaning towards going to Mazdadriver's in April now instead of VIR in March. NASCAR is in town that weekend and all the hotels are booked already. Bleah.

Just signed up for the Mazda Driver's Shenandoah event in April. Car is almost ready, just need to install my trailing arms/toe links, order some new pads and possibly tires. Still looks like garbage from the crash in October but it's back to road-worthiness at least. Hope to see some folks there!

Just got back from the VW R32 club event at Shenandoah this weekend. Ran in the advanced group for the first time. About 90% of the field was faster than me so that was a real wake-up call. Maybe I should not be running street tires and expecting to keep up with people as I'm severely limited in braking, cornering and accelerating out of turns with 340 treadwear . I must say though, open passing is great fun.

I signed up for the Hyper Drives at Hyperfest just to get my feet wet and do a final shake down the car...thanks to Armitage and Patfat I now have the rest of my summer to plan out as well as fitting in some local auto-x.

There is an auto-cross drivers school being put on at Fed Ex Field by SCCA on the 9th of June, sadly the car won't be ready for it and I don't want to rush getting it prepared. It is only $145.

Matthew,
If you really want to get fast stick w/ the street tires until you're faster than 90% of those boys on hoosiers and slicks

Seriously when it comes to HPDE and even amateur racing the majority of the field don't have the time and or talent to really get the most out their cars and you'll learn car control much faster on street tires because the car will be going slower at the limit and you'll find the true limit sooner. Also you'll push yourself more to keep up with and pass those fellas on racing tires.

Watch this video titled: VIR N BMW 11-04 Traffic http://fritz.sysadmin-racing.com/

I'll admit I don't have many videos on street tires but in this one I'm driving a mostly stock FD with bolt ons (300 rwhp max) on stock wheels with es 100s. I'm driving in the instructor group and the car that passes me at the end is a full blown race car (old e30 m3 w/ a v6 in it).
