Power FC tuning questions

Hello I was looking at getting the Apexi PFC and controller but i was wondering how hard it is to tune and program yourself. I live in North Dakota and there isnt a tuning shop anywhere near me. Im not worried about installing it but only tuning it. I've read where the shop your purchasing it from can tune it. But does it need to be on the car when its tuned? Please give me a hand and tell me the best thing to do. Or is there a better ECU I can purchase that doens't involve a lot of tuning like a Haltec or something?

Your options:

1. buy the PFC from anywhere and mail it to XS Engineering to tune it for your mods - $150
2. buy the PFC from www.shaneracing.com, they will tune it for your mods before they send it, plug and play
3. buy the PFC from www.rx7store.net and support the forum. If you only have moderate mods, the base maps will probably be ok.

Yes, you'll get the best tuning results with the car present at the shop, but it's not absolutely necessary.

Read read read this forum, get more comfortable, and begin tweaking the PFC yourself.

Thanks for the info. I was looking at getting the PFC from rx7store.net and it seems that is the way to go. But I dont think I can go with the stock base maps because this is what im running:

Trust Jasma full exhaust ( dp, mp, cat-back )
Trust Turbo Timer
HKS Supersequential BOV
RS Akimoto Top Mount Intercooler
Eibach Sportline Springs
Tokico Illumna 5 way adjustables

And Im looking at ordering this along with the Power FC

XS Engineering T04E Turbo Kit
Denso Competition Fuel Pump
Apexi AVC-R Boost Control
Secondary Fuel Rail with Bosch 1600cc Injectors

So what should I do? I've tried calling rx7store.net but nobody will answer. Please tell me the correct thing to do. Thanks

You might talk to xs and see if they will sport you a map if your buying their single kit.

Yeh, chances are if you buy the PFC and the turbo kit from XS or SR they'll hook you up with some kind of tuning deal. They'd be foolish not to, considering the kind of coin involved.

If you don't have a tuning shop around, try to see where your nearest one is. If it's not too far, maybe you could make a weekend trip out of it. Certainly would be worth the piece of mind to have your car dyno tuned so you know for sure that you're not leaning out too much. Plus they might be able to do it all w/ the wideband O2 sensor, giving you even more piece of mind.

Pre-programmed maps and stuff are cool, but are generally only good for a *basic* tune for your mods. Since the possible combination of all the different brands and models of mods out ther is insanely huge, you'd only be doing yourself a favor by getting that **** on the dyno.

Thanks for all the help guys. I spoke to someone at rx7store.net and they hooked me up. They can send the Power FC to XS Engineering and over the phone they can tune it for me just by telling them my mods. I will still have to do the fine tuning but at least it will be done correct by a good shop.
