Power FC for an FC3S

Everytime I get onto RX-7club I see questions about the Power FC for the FC3S and a lot of misinformation put out in responce to the questions. I live in Japan and have been running a Power FC in my GT-X for a while now. Here are a couple of responces to questions I continually see.

The PFC for the FC is not an FD PFC with a modified harness. Ap Engineering took Power FC's from the zenki FD's and re-chipped them. The new chip they installed has the base map for an FC3S, and came with a custom harness, a custom MAP sensor and a modified FD Intake temp sensor, so you cannot just take an FD PFC and modify it. The FC PFC is also clearly marked with FC3S on the serial number sticker. I would not recommend buying one on the auctions unless it comes with all of this. I have seen them modified to work, but with some glitches. They also have not been made for about three years now, so even here in Japan they are rare to find. When they do come up for auction they usually sale for $1200-1700, so they are not cheap. Also you need the Datalogit. I know everyone says they can be tuned with the commander but this a half-truth. The CPU can only be adjusted with the commander, I believe +/- 15%. To get the full range of tuning capability you need the datalogit. I do highly recommend this computer if you can find one. Even at the elevated price they are well worth it. If anyone has questions, please feel free to ask. I will help you out as best as I can.

Good info! I'll add that to the FAQ, as this question comes up often.

Thanks,
Dale

I forgot to add the FC power FC will only work with the 89-91 FC3S.

so the Power FC is not truly universal then and we cannot use the 91.5 FD Power FCs to tune it to our spec?

The Power FC is universal with one huge exception. If you open them up they all have car specific chips in them. The Power FC for an FC3s has a custom chip built by AP Engineering for Apexi. Each chip is marked for the car they are programed. So no you cannot use an FD Power FC.

I have everything I need to hook up the PFC in my FC3S, but I need to know how the Intake Temp sensor is moddified. I havn't started putting it in yet because I want to know if I am going to need anything for this part of the install.

On a Side note what kinda of HP gains have some of you had with the PFC, I have a custom 3" turbo back single exhaust, 720cc secondaries and FD fuel pump, that is about it. none of this is on the car yet but all will be once I hook up the PFC.

Wow I'm really glad I found this thread.

I have the AP engineering PFC for the FC3S and do not have the special map sensor or the air temp sensor. Is there I can do to get it to work correctly with an FD map sensor? If so what do I need to do.

This is what I have:
-AP engineering PFC
-special adaptor harness
-MAP sensor harness
-FD map sensor
-commander
-access to datalogit

The car barely idles and the base map is way off (both timing and fuel) according to the commander. It makes no difference whether or not the FD map sensor is plugged in or not. I have the special harness for the map sensor with 2 plugs (3 wires each) that can plug into the FD map sensor and one wire from each of those harnesses is terminated at the harness end that plugs into the ECU and left open. I tried tapping each open wire into the 3rd pin on the harness to the corresponding plug on the map sensor with no changes.

Sorry for the long quote. Any help is appreciated. This is the only thing stopping me from getting tuned. I've been driving on the stock ECU in the meantime until I get this figured out.
