looking for an ECU

dont jump all over me just yet. i have a few questions that i couldnt find from searching.
1)if the PFC is a stand-alone ECU that can be tuned, what is this i hear about it having to be sent back to XS for remapping or whatever?
2)how hard is it to mess with this ECU???? i want this one cause it would definately last me longer than the pettit unlimited.
3)can this be tinkered with by ME???? can the average person remap it??? are extra maps available that would give it a ball park MAP???? i have two mods now, and will be getting an ECU shortly. i jsut dont want to have to buy one ECU that i will be selling later.
help me out guys.

(1) If you buy the PFC that is not programmed for your engines mods, then you have to program it yourself. This is not hard even though there are 1200 total fuel+timing cells to do. The proplem is finding a set of starter maps for an engine that is close to yours.

There are a few maps listed on the MAPS and Instructions forum. If you can not find a close match, this is one reason you might have to send the unit to XS. Another reason is if you want 850 primary injectors and want then to work the smoothest, or install very large secondary injectors that are above the standard limit in the PFC.

(2) It is way ahead of the old hard reprogrammed ecus like Pettit or XS. It can do a lot more, especially if you buy a DATALOGIT box which can even access the hiddin featurs that only XS can get to. It also makes the PFS PMS outdated since it can do so much more.

(3) Anyone can tinker, but what is your definition of average? Most people whom I have met who can work on their own cars with precision and know what they are doing are above average . Most are degreed professionals. Thus by my experince, NO; an average person can not do it. Remember the old joke, half of your friends are below average.

okay, i do 95% of the mods/work on my car. i dont think that i fall under the non-intelligent area. i am sure that i am more than capable of working on it, but i have yet to see the program in real life. its just a computer, how hard can it be. i just dont know what goes behind the scenes of tuning the PFC for mods. is there a way you just tell it that you got the mod, or do you have to acutally adjust the AF ratio and timing maps yourself. like i said, i have played with hondata computers before for hondas, but not much. how different is it from that?

You can not program it by mod name as it does not have this capability. You have to change all standard parameters with the commander. For hidden parms, you need the DATALOGIT. You have to know what you are doing.

Most PFCs come with the "base mod" set which has safe timing maps for street porting, but fuel maps more suited for only DP, cat, and cat-back.

That is what mine came with. Start off with a safe timing set and maybe a little rich on fuel. Then with a linear O2 sensor, get your AFRs in the ballpark, maybe a little rich. Then play with timing a little.

WARNING. Fuel maps can NOT be copied/used if they were programmed by XS. XS changes the hidden base maps which you only can do with the DATALOGIT. Only commander set fuel maps can copied and used.

The unit is very easy to use even though the manual is lacking.

Read the historical posts. There are some good info hear.
