FC Datalogit for Mac OS!

I checked with Glen about the chance of porting the datalogit program to run on the Macintosh OS. Apparently it'll be a possibility if there are at least 10 people interested. I'd be one, and if I remember correctly, there were a few others running Macs instead of the Wintel platform. I really have no desire to purchase an extra Windows platform laptop just for tuning as I have two laptop macs currently. So...if you're interested, email glen@rx7.net.nz and post to the forum that you're interested as well. Thanks!

I would be interested in one as well!

How would it hook up? USB (too slow) Firewire? Or do we have to have a serial port connector or something? Please let it be for OSX too!

Keep us informed.

Actually, USB, at 1.1mbps would do just fine I'm assuming. Given the fact that the stock processor in the PFC is onlya 16mhz chip, I can't imagine it would push so much info as to overload USB. USB 2.0 looks great although Mac pioneered IE1394 firewire and they're sticking to it. I believe there's a serial to SCSI adapter if you have a pre-G4 G3. If it's an iBook, you'd be SOL unless they do firewire or USB. I have both. It'd be great to use the iBook instead of my G3 Bronze due to the size of the iBook. Buy I get over 5 hours battery life during heavy usage when I use two batteries in my G3. Put it to sleep when not in use, and it'll last a week before needing to be recharched. If you're at say an import event and making changes to the tuning, it'd be critical to have a laptop with a battery life of more than 2 hours of real usage (not sitting idly by).

Oh, I just thought of another solution to our dilemma as well....simply run a PC emulator on the Mac. I can't remember who makes it, but they have a new, OSX compatible program out that will run Windows 98 or Millenium. I'm sure it would work for us unless the program runs extremely slow and causes bits of info to be lost. It'd be cheaper than purchasing a wintel laptop. But....I'd still rather run a native app in Mac OS.

That's the program I was thinking of...I guess we'd be the beta testers. There "could" be conflicts running the datalogit program with the Virtual PC program. Looks to be the cheapest way to do it though. Do they make a Serial to USB adapter?

Ok, latest update, Glen has said a few people are interested in the datalogit software beig ported to the Mac. This would of course, be ideal. In the meantime, Virtual PC is out there for both OS9 and 10.1. The OSX version will run in OSX or in "Classic". I believe the cost is around $160? That seems a bit low so I could be wrong. Might be an "upgrade" price. Glen will supply a Serial to USB adapter allowing most Mac powerbook users to use the software. With the newer Powerbook/iBooks, that's essential since SCSI is DOA. I'm going to order the datalogit and I'll test everything out and get back to those interested.

I have not tested it yet....I have the Datalogit but not Virtual PC as of yet. Jodeny, we may have to try again here soon. I've got a 500mhz Ibook and a 400mhz PowerBook with lots of ram.

Hey rx7tt95 I am about to purchase a new notebook computer, and I am thinking (85% chance) that I am getting the new IBook. What is the likely hood that Glen will make a software that will support the MAC operation system? IF not likely how easily will it be to make the currently released version work with the new IBook. And is there any downside of making the currently released software version working with the MAC (for example, missing features, slow loading, different or abnormal graphics or just images that plan don't work). Please let me know because I would really like to get a MAC instead of sticking with this PC that I have now.

I'm pretty sure there won't be a Mac version. A version for Pockect PC's is in the works though.
Your best bet is using Virtual PC, if you have a friend with a copy of Windows you can get the DOS version for around $75.00.
There is a tread in which rx7tt95 details getting datalogit to work with his powerbook virtual pc and an USB/Serial adapter.
It works great!
HYDOUKEN, you could also use this method. The new ibooks are very nice, and with a lower price you won't find a better value in the compact notebook sector.
Of course the updated Ti powerbook with superdrive has caught me eye.
