Emmissions Tuning Questions

I know it has been asked before, but I need some help.

I have an FC with the commander on my single turbo FD. The thing runs great and has a beautiful 3" straight pipe. I don't know who installed it or tuned it, but it runs and idles well. I honestly don't know anything about tuning the commander. I used to have a Haltech in my FC, but obviously this is totally different.

Being in Atlanta, I have to pass emissions. I put a cat on it and tried that way. The emissions guy said that the cat was working fine, but I failed because I was running too rich.

I want to be able to lean it out so that I can pass emissions. However, I don't want to lose the map that I have loaded now. Can anyone here help me lean it out just to pass emissions and then get it back. Brand new cat but no air pump. Thanks!

To do it properly requires a Datalogit to log the test. A wideband and AFR logging helps also. Then you lean out the area of the map where the test runs.
Running about 10-20% ethanol with the gas also helps.

Does you car have a cat and working airpump? If not you are F*****!

I have a brand new cat but no airpump. I have a wideband but I had to disconnect it when I installed the cat as there was no bung for it. Where do I get a datalogit from?

Get datalogit here: http://rx7.com/store/rx7/fdecu.html

fyi some people use an electric air pump from an rx8 or corvette if the stock air pump doesn't fit with their turbo kit.

Yikes, too much money for me. I would prefer to spend that money on tires. Anyone know where I can get a used one?
Or, is there a cheaper, simpler (read more ghetto) way to lean it out?

You can use the Commander in ghost trace mode to see where the engine runs for the test.

But you will need some type of air pump to force air into the cat or pre-cat exhaust to burn off the excess hydrocarbons. GM electric air pumps are use by some just to pass emmissions testing.

I don't know if this helps but here is what my readings said:

25/25 Test: 50/15 Test:

Reading Allowed Reading Allowed
HC PPM 719 132 Fail 799 136 Fail
CO% 2.98 .73 Fail 2.34 .76 Fail
NOxPPM 203 943 Pass 348 1045 Pass
RPM 1950 3000 max 1762 3000 max
CO+CO2% 15.8 6 min 15.5 6 min

Don't know if these numbers mean anything to anyone.

I don't think it will pass just by leaning it out at idle. You need to pump air into the cat to help burn the extra gas. if your stock airpump wont fit with the single turbo try an electric one.

If you want to try just leaning it out, you can write down the maps you have now, then lean out the cells around idle for emissions, then change them back after you pass.

The last time I tested, I put about 1/2 gallon of denatured alcohol in with about 5 gallons of gas in my tank. It was WAY under the allowed limit on all three tests.

I also have my airpump hooked up though.

Keep in mind that the PowerFC doesn't properly manage the "Split Air Bypass" functionality, and installation documentation recommends you bypass (cut) the harness wire. Even with the air pump installed, you will have to hot-wire that functionality, or install a stock ECU.

Of course I should have seen the single turbo reference, and so none of my comments are probably relevant.

Yeah, I found some GM electric pumps on e-bay for for about $50 with shipping. Corvette and Camero ones in particular. I figures I could mount it somewhere in the car or even under the car, plumb it into the cat, and hardwire it directly to the battery so it just blows all the time. Obviously, I would pull it out after the test.

My second option is to fly to Miami next weekend and register it there since I also have a residence there. Would that be the easiest option right now?

I Love Florida!

I gave up and drove to Miami. It cost me $350 to register my car here vs. $38 in Georgia. Oh well!

Thanks for the help guys.

I love my FD, but keep it running clean in Atlanta. Think about it next summer when you can't see downtown from Buckhead and your eyes are running from the smog in the air! OK, I'll get off the soap box. . .

You can blame the GOV for that. For many years while light trucks were becoming the standard vehicle for many people, they were emmissions exempt.
Then we have the many diesel vehicles with no emmisions controls.
How about jet aircraft and cows?

No easy answer.
