Power FC Emissions, leave the stuff in?
Emissions, leave the stuff in?
Hey guys,
I've been doing some searching, and I see that people are passing emissions with a PFC installed. One thing I'm not clear on though is whether your emissions stuff on the engine is still installed or not, and if it is, is it functioning or not?
It looks like when you install the PFC, you cut the wires to the emissions stuff. Does that mean that even if you leave the stuff in the car, it's not functioning? If it's not functioning, is there a point to leaving it in the car?
Any comments? Thanks!

It may appear that all emissions components are junked with the installation of the PFC, but this is not the case. AWS isn't emissions related so forget about that one. EGR doesn't even come installed on 1995 cars, so forget about those two pins/wires as well. The split air bypass is part of the air-control system, which is part of the emissions system, but I'm not sure in what state the solenoid ends up when the wire is cut... perhaps it's always open and therefore always sends air to the cat (when the airpump clutch is engaged)? Dale, any idea?
In any case, it is certainly possible to pass emissions with the PFC, a working airpump, and a cat, but I'm still glad that my state did away with emissions testing.

Actually, all things are related to differences in emissions equipment between Japanese and US cars. AWS is there for US federal cold start emissions, BTW.
Anyhow, the changes should NOT effect the PFC passing emissions - all key components are there. EGR is a totally useless system on the car, but Mazda had to put it on to meet federal emissions requirements at the time, same with AWS. The split air bypass is I believe just a way for extra air pump air to be recirculated.
For a visual inspection, you would likely need to leave the EGR valve in place, though.

Andy,
I live in Houston. The only thing TX cares about is passing the dyno tests.
My old non-seq modded engine would pass with the cat, air pump, and ACV working. Rest was removed.
Now I am single turbo with only air pump and cat for testing. Have passed this way also. Do a search here and on the south forum for my posts on it.
