electric fan and boost controller

I am currently running a Ford Taurus E-fan in my FC. Just got an AP.Engineering Power FC and I am wondering if I can wire the Power FC up to my fan to control it. I have other options if this won't work, just need to know.

I am also debating on using the boost controller built into the Power FC or using a Greddy Profec Spec II. I would like to use the power fc. Arghx has some information, including a link to a website to buy solenoids, but he didn't have part number included. Would like more information on this as well. Thanks.

Regarding the fan - yes you can wire using the PFC to control however:
1. The PFC must have engine coolant temperature input to PFC pin 3E.
2. The fan must be driven off of a relay with the relay coil grounding driven from PFC pin 3D.

Take a look at the FD's wiring diagram - it will help a lot. It gets more complicated if the fan is multi-speed and/or if you want to integrate AC into it.

Just to make sure I am looking at this right, is the arrow pointing at the correct position to output to a relay for the cooling fan. Pin 3E already has a wire into it, so I am assuming it is already set to have a connection to the temp sensor in the thermostat neck. Is this correct?

Also what is the wire with the question mark? I notice the Banzai-Racing harness adapter seems to have a similar wire also.

Well, did a little deeper searching and found Iwan's writeup. Pretty confident in pin 3D now, and I know that the spare wire is the speed signal, but what is that? Do I use it for anything on the FC?

We integrated the fan control wire into our adapter harness so that it controls the fan at the single pin green diagnostic connector behind the left headlight.

The unterminated wire is the speed sensor it connects to the cruise control module to pick up the vehicle speed. It is not a requirement to hook up for correct operation of the PFC.

You might want to look at our installation instructions, it will help you with the fan and the speed sensor. You will need a datalogit to set the fan temps, the default setting is too high http://banzai-racing.com/store/S5_PFC_adapter.html

Great info. Thank you. I have your write-up and Iwan's both for reference. The Power FC has two fan settings. Is it possible to set it to control both high and low speed? Looking at this, since the Power FC switches ground, I am guessing not, but it would be nice. Otherwise I will just run power to high speed, and use that.

The PFC only controls one fan speed (relay on or off from pin 3D). From a FD perspective (and what the PFC was developed for) the fans were wired to host three inputs whereas each powered alone was normal speed but speeds increased when two had power and increased again with all three powered.

One controlled from PFC via relays 2 and 4 (redundant fault tollerant)
One controlled from the AC system via relay 1
One controlled from an unique thermo switch (TII FC's have this switch) via relay 3.

So for example:
  • If the engine was cool and AC on the fans would be on Low Speed (relay 1 energized)
  • If the engine was hot (PFC demanding cooling) and AC on the fans would be on medium speed (relays 1,2, and 4 energized)
  • If the engine was hot (normal) and PFC demanding cooling and AC off the fans would be on low (relays 2 and 4 energized)
  • If the engine was hot (high normal) the PFC demanding cooling and thermoswitch closed the fans would be on medium (relays 2,3 and 4 energized)
  • If the engine was hot (high normal) the PFC demanding cooling, thermoswitch closed, and AC on the fans would be on high (all relays energized)

Now with that said in FC Edit (Datalogit) settings 3, you can set a different fan 1 (the fan controlled from pin 3D) "on" temperature with AC and without AC. Fan 2 I don't believe does anything. This all seems academic as the fan you are using only has one speed, right?

Fan has two speeds, but I just have it wired up to high at the moment.

On the subject of boost control:

What turbo do you have? Is it internal or externally wastegated? Is there a wire coming out of FD pin 4U (wastegate solenoid)? If so it should be connected to S5 T2 pin 3R:



Do you have the original S5 T2 boost control solenoid, the one mounted on the oil filler?

I am running stock turbo for now. I do have the stock boost control solenoid. Pin 4u is connected to 3r as suggested. Will the Power FC control that? Can you actually adjust it? Back on the subject of the fan, I have been looking around for the clip to add a wire into the correct slot on the adapter, but nobody local stock them. Any suggestions?

Yes, the PFC can control OEM boost control solenoids. In fact, I am using one right now with an external wastegate (FD solenoid technically, but they are pretty much the same). It just took a plumbing adjustment to work with an external gate. You should have a Datalogit if you want to use the PFC for boost control though. It will allow you to adjust more settings and it will allow you to log the solenoid duty cycle. The log below shows rpm, boost ("PIM"), and boost control solenoid duty ("WG%")

The Commander will allow you to switch between low and high boost settings (you can raise or lower boost without a laptop and without popping the hood) but you can't log what the PFC is actually with the boost control solenoid without a Datalogit and laptop. The Datalogit also lets you adjust the minimum rpm at which the wastegate will open. It's really not that complicated. You're mostly fiddling with two settings "boost" and "duty" .

Your little description thing says "89 GXL Turbo." Are you using a complete T2 harness? Are all the wires already there for the boost control solenoid?

I do have the TII wiring harness and the boost solenoid. I have it disconnected right now because I was hitting around 15psi with it connected. With just the wastegate spring I still hit 11 or 12. I have a 3" exhaust and I have ported the wastegate as much as I could. It is a street ported motor too. The datalogit is actually on its way, should get it next Wednesday.

I don't think you should be running a boost controller at all right now. Your wastegate is being overwhelmed still, and when it gets cold outside the creep will get worse. Who knows how high it will climb. I had a streetported engine with an s5 turbo and ported wastegate (ported to the limit of the flapper) hit 21psi in the winter when it was under 40F outside. Needless to say, the engine detonated but it did survive (I was running an Rtek 1.7 ECU).

You can try pulling a ton of timing at higher boost levels to hopefully stop the creep should it occur. PM Sandro, he set up his map to do that. He races his FD in a class that doesn't allow ported wastegates. The other option is put restriction in the exhaust (a cat).

To any who have modified the harness for controlling the electric fan, where did you get the clips to add the wire to the harness? I have had no luck locally.

PM Banzai Racing about it. Otherwise you will have to get it out of an FD engine harness. Plenty of FD owners have junk harnesses that they replaced which are in good shape down by the ECU. Your best bet is to just have one of the connectors cut off. There are two size pins, a larger one and a smaller one. I don't know off the top of my head whether the fan relay pin is big or small. To install it, you lift the locking tab on your adapter harness with a small pick or flathead. Then slide the pin in and put the locking tab back into place. Make sure the tab is secure and the pins won't come out, or you will have all sorts of electrical gremlins.

Looks like I am in luck. I just got new ID720s from turblown. They came with an extra tab for the wiring. It looks to be the right size.

be careful, it could still have a slightly different pin design. Just make sure it inserts into the harness plug properly and locks in there securely.

If not post a WTB thread on the 3rd gen section for an ECU plug pigtail. I'm sure you could get it cheap
