can water injection cause detonation?

I finally had my car running good, my tune was good, fixed my missfires. Everything was perfect. So this morning I topped off my gas. only 3.5 gallons were needed to top off, and i then hooked up my water injection. I did a 3rd gear pull when some light, rapid detonation occured (75 on the PFC). After that the car couldnt idle. I limped it home and diagnosed that an apex seal had blown.

So I ask, could water injection cause detonation if there was too much water?
also, could 3.5 gallons of "bad" gas cause a problem?

No,
Water injected reduces detonation three different ways in general to start with, and if you were to add too much water, it will actually soak your sparkplugs and prevent them from firing, no fire-no heat, no heat-no detonation... and the engine would have lost all power long before you would have been able to dump enough water into the engine to cause it to hydraulic and mechanically break a seal... Actual "Bad Gas" is not likely... there is however summer and winter grades (winter grade vaporizes at a lower temp there for would be a problem at higher air temps), but I would not think you would have that issue were you live... I have, however seen the odd occurance of a supply tanker driver dumping diesel into the wrong tank at the gas station... this would be difficult to prove unless you had filled your tank, with only 3.5 out of 16 or so gal this would have diluted the diesel enough to drop the overall fuel rating enough to cause problems at high boost... but again difficult to prove...first off check to see if that station sells diesel then check with the station manager to see if anyone else has complained or see if that pump has been taken out of service since you have been there...

ok good to know, i was wondering if it would hydro or not, guess that proves not so. I'll check with the station to see whats up.
