Power FC Basic Question
Basic Question
If you buy a PowerFC...
... and are using the base map until it is tuned
... will the base map protect your engine, or will you need to baby the throttle until it is programmed?

If this is true, then I would assume that using an EManage is safer for an untuned unit because it will use the stock ECU as the base map.

I was asking if the EManage is safer in an untuned state?
I am asking because I want to know the safest way of starting out with tuning a car for performance. If I buy a unit that I have not tuned YET, I am assuming that the EManage would be safer for my engine (running it as I normally do now) UNTIL I tuned it.
This to me means that the Emanage is a good learning system as opposed to a PFC that has to be babied until properly tuned.
If you have mild mods, the default PFC map is perfectly safe for 10-11 psi. If you are running single turbo or twins with all the bolt-ons, you will probably need to richen the map up a little bit. A ported motor should probably be run with slightly more conservative timing than the default PFC map.
The E-manage is crap for an FD.

Referencing the 'TRUE OR FALSE' thread...
What I got from that was that with all the bolt-ons (Stock or 99 Twins), creep might become an issue. I would hope that the Profec B could keep the boost @ 10 lbs, but if it doesn't, having a computer that can control the fuel beyond 10 lbs seemed to be a good idea.
The EManage is not appropriate for the FD? OK... Then the next question is...
If the car creeps beyond the 10-11 you mentioned, then the Power FC base map will be able to provide appropriate fuel and spark timing at that boost level - without being tuned? If so, sound like babying is not absolutely necessary?
Conclusion...
The base PFC maps will protect the car, but having it tuned for my parts will give optimum power/economy, or whatever I am tuning for?

Like I said before, no use in playing around until it's tuned.
If you have mild mods (intake, downpipe, cat-back) the base map on the PowerFC is fine. A midpipe is the "line in the sand" - stay with the stock cat, and the PFC will be fine.
If you have more than that, I would DEFINITELY keep my foot out until it was tuned. Maybe even remove the pills from the vacuum lines to the wastegates to keep boost around the spring rate (7psi).

Thanks to Dale for clearing up what I meant in my earlier post. I would definitely richen up the base map for running a midpipe, to be really safe, I would significantly richen the fuel cells above the boost range you are running (10 psi) until the car can be tuned.
I don't think a mid-pipe would ever be in my future, just the opened intake, down, and cat-back. And I already have a Profec B, so I'm thinking the base PFC settings would be OK for me with no problems until tuned.
Thanks for the info.
