Yes, but you probably still want to get a boost controller...

yep, it is all in how you tune it to control your car. Mine will be set up for 1300cc secondaries in about a week.

PFC does fine at controlling boost with the stock twins. Badog, locally here, ripped out his AVCR and went back to the PFC for boost control.

1300cc's are also no problem, you'll need to make a few changes which I believe can be done from the commander w/out a datalogit. Inj size & inj delay.

Size: 1300cc
Delay: 0.20

in my experience the pfc sucks as a boost controller. It is not accurate in its readings or its control.

get a profec b so you can rely on it.

use both

Question PFC boost control with Japan Spec Twins

I plan to install Japan spec twins with an Anfini Y-pipe.

I noticed that the J-specs don't have a "pill" in one of the wastegate precontrol hoses, like the stock US spec twins did?

Anyhow, I'm at a loss on how to control boost with the J-specs. I'm currently using the stock ECU with my stock twins. I have a "10.5" psi pill inserted in the precontrol hose (slightly larger diameter than the stock pill). If I want to install my J-specs before getting the Apexi PFC, will I need to get a stand-alone boost controller?

I have plans for an Apexi PFC. Admittedly, I'm confused as to how the PFC controls the boost WITHOUT a stand-alone boost controller.

Anyone willing to school me on this?

FWIW, my CURRENT mods are RB intake duct, stock airbox with K&N filter, stock IC, downpipe, high-flow cat, RB dual tip catback. As I mentioned, the boost is controlled with a "10.5 psi" wastegate precontrol pill that is slightly larger in diameter than the stock pill. I'm using the stock ECU with these mods, and have had no trouble. The current motor and US spec twins have 102,250 miles on them...

Planned mods for spring/summer 2003 are KDR ported motor, Koyo big-*** radiator, Japan-spec sequential twins, Anifni Y-pipe, Rotary Extreme HMIC, Cold Air Intake, Mini Batt, Fuel Reservoir, Apexi PFC...

I plan to run 10.8 psi max with Japan spec twins. My aim is to make reliable hp, WITHOUT cooking the new KDR "special sauce" motor.

For those who don't know, I'm strictly a road racer, so BIG rwhp is not as much of a concern as cool-running, durability, and reliability ARE...

SleepR. The Power FC controls boost just like the stock ECU did. It controls the PC & Wastegate actuators by cycling the vent solenoids. On the PFC you can adjust the duty cycle to reduce spikes or to increase spool depending on your local conditions (temp, humid, altitude all effect this).

The later model twin turbos have restrictions to the PC & WG lines built into the primary turbo snail. That is why there is no restrictor orafice in the hose...

Hope that clears things up.
Eric.

Question Eric

Does this mean, that if I want to run the J-specs on my current motor (not waiting until the "special sauce" KDR motor), then I'll need to get the Apexi Power FC FIRST, otherwise, I'll get spikes because of the lack of the orifice pill right? Or will I get very little boost since there is no restriction to the wastegate?

Abbreviations-- PC = Precontrol? WG = Wastegate?

It's up in the air! You'll probably see some spikes & a higher boost level (My opinion here), but how much in unknown. You'd be better off with the PFC now, so you'll have a junk motor to learn the PFC on & you'll be able to adjust the boost weareas with the stock ECU you get what you got.

There is a restriction in the PC & WG lines, but it's built into the turbo snail now vs: being in the hose.

Yes PC=Pre Control, WG=Waste Gate.

Re: Re: Eric

Ahh...that's a good idea...do some tuning with my old low compression motor, so if something bad happens...well...it's not like I'll feel bad. Eric...you just gave a whole new strategy to work with

Ok so I'd better start loading up those charges on my VISA card now:

Immediate need parts list:

Rotary Extreme: HMIC, CAI, and Apexi Power FC

Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development: Anfini Y-pipe

Just so I'm clear...I WON'T need a stand-alone boost controller with the Apexi Power FC, RIGHT???

Right, a stand alone boost controler is NOT NEEDED. They're nice, but not completely needed.

Also, if you have a laptop then GET THE DATALOGIT! It's another $300 but it opens up the Power FC like nothing else. You can see the base map, alter what temp the fans come on, Log events, & A/F, & it makes ignition split map design MUCH easier...

Enjoy & be safe.
Eric.

Oh yea, you probably want to wait until your new motor to install those turbos. It'll be easier with the motor out, and you don't want to screw up your old motor on new turbos.

Apex seal pieces are not kind to turbines...

Re: Re: Re: Re: Eric

Yes, I do have a laptop, it's an old one, Toshiba, 1997...will that work all right? So what does the datalogit do for you versus the non datalogit version Power FC?

Bummer, about using my tired old turbos for tuning though. Both the motor and turbos have 102,250 miles!

I guess I can tune with new cold air intake, HMIC?

Thanks for the info!

Yea, the toshiba should work fine as long as it's a Pent & has a serial port.

The Datalogit is a add on for the Power FC. It gives you the ability to log everything from injector duty cycle to PC, TC, & WG solenoids. It also gives you the ability to save, load & trade maps with other people. Without the datalogit interface you have to manually cell by cell make the changes!

The stock map in the Power FC will be fine for an intake & IC. It's probably go further then that but Wide band O2 measurments are the key.

One more question, will the A'pexi Power FC's base maps work with a ported motor, J-spec twins, IC, intake, dp, hiflow cat, RB catback?
