Analysis Of Goodfellows Ignition Maps

After retarding to 12 degrees on boost, IGL keeps the same timing no matter what the revs or boost are. This is similar to timing when using a mechanical advance system(distributor) which could not varing timing do to boost, or revs past a fixed point. It is safe but less efficient.

I would go back and verify both timing maps. My
analysis of timing split shows some very bad and unsafe areas. Negative split is dangerous.

Who is this Goodfellows fella :p ?

Seriously, the maps are correct...that's what is in my commander. Perhaps we could all collaborate and tweak them? I'm not happy w/the "12" phenomenon on my IGL that Chuck refers to. I'm open to suggestions; I'll be the guinea pig

GoodfellaFD3S,

Sorry about that, but you can't go back an edit the title after
submission.

When I said are the maps correct, I meant your recording of them onto EXCEL. You have some bad timing split. Look at what I included. Just go in and change the IGT so that the new split will be safe. If you use a J&S, you need at lease 12 split to insure that the trailing does not fire before the leading.

The stock maps have about 15 split in the boost areas.
The mod maps split floats around a lot.

Attached is my split that I am using until I finish my upgrade/tunning process. Then I'll go with less, about 8.

Talking Chuck D in da house..

Yo Chuck,

what mods are you running? I might try your IGL and IGT out. Also, what INJ map are you using? Base?

One more thing...can I be in the gang of fatty ?

Houston 1 map was my original from Ray, but since then my mods have slightly changed and I have modified all of the maps. They are based on the "mod base maps".

My mods are:
01: Twin K&N filters with M2 hard pipes feeding non-seq turbos with clipped turbine blades and scalloped compressor housings for about 9% more flow. I have the Pettit #1 blueprint job with clipped turbine blades.

02: BLITZ FMIC

03: DP, MP, cat-back

03: Complete intake system from turbo compressor outlets to the engine intake inlets is gasket/port matched to decrease
turbulance. The throttle body vacuum secondaries are removed along with the center shaft support and that area has been ground down and smoothed for better flow.

04: Exhaust ports are opened to what RAY does for single turbo street engines.

05: The intake ports are stock in opening size where they exit the housings into the engine. But from there back to the intake manifold they are opened up and port matched to the metal intake gasket. This is like keeping cam timing the same but increasing valve lift or valve size. Port timing remains stock but flow through it is increased. This gives a power increase but along the lines of the stock engine, more over the complete rpm band with no shift towards the higher rpms. I wanted more power with streetability and easier to pass emissions.

06: I currently have stock injectors. But I will be going to 1200cc secondaries soon because of maxing the stock ones out. This will require redoing the fuel maps.

07: Nippodensa upgrade puel pump and Crane HI-6R ignition.

08: Completely dynamically balanced engine.

I'll attach my current maps.

I might try Chuck's maps...Astro, what the hell do you mean by negative split?

Chuck, three things: (1) thanks for posting all that stuff, I know it's time consuming (2) a 92 R1? Please expound upon this and (3) can be in the Gang of Fatty?

GoodfellaFD3S,

Yes, you might be able to be a member of "The Gang Of Fatty". Go to:

//www.users.dircon.co.uk/~sultan/ymm/gof.htm

and read. I have been a fan of HK Kung Fu movies for over 10 years and have met, talked to, and was photographed with Michelle when she was in Houston in 2000. I spent a few minutes with her. She also autographed my my DVD of the movie "Butterfly And Sword". She is one of my favorites.

My R1 was purchased in July 1992 and was made in March 1992. So my 1993 model RX-7 R1 is really a 1992 car.

Negative split is when the trailing ignition fires before the leading. This can cause very high combustion pressure.

My R1 has a build date of March 1992 as well. I guess I have a 92 R1, too :p

I'm going to try your maps out and see how they feel. Very high combustion pressure sounds bad

GoodfellaFD3S - How do you like that Walbro fuel pump??? How was the installation? Does it just drop right in or do you have to modify some stuff? Its not listed as being a "drop in" pump for our cars so I wasnt sure about getting it

Sorry for this being off topic guys!!!

Thanks,
STEPHEN

Hey Stephen,

It seems to work fine. I actually had a mechanic friend install it while I swapped the midpipe for the cat, so I'll have to ask him about installation. I'm pretty sure he said it was relatively easy and drop-in. I got it for 128 bones shipped to my door. The link is on Wade Lanham's website.
