Urgent Engine Question

Hi,

I have an opportunity to buy a 1 year old 13B that is a Mazda factory rebuild for my 1990 RX-7. It is still in the factory crate and has been stored in his garage (Arizona). The owner has decided to perform a V-8 conversion. Having been in the crate for a year and since I still have another year before I would be installing it, will the engine still be ok in it's current state or must I perform some storage precautions?

TIA,

Nancy

your not being ignored, and I am not the best to reply so I will just share my thoughts.

First thing is how complete is the motor that is Factory rebuilt? The last one I looked into from mazda they were offering a "short block" that comes with only housings and internals. That meant using my old turbos, intake, exhaust, injection, sensors... or new aftermarket stuff.

secondly, motors are typically built using assembly lube and are ussually well preserved for storage. If you had a motor sitting up for any period you would want to do your own storage such as marvel or trans fluid to lubricate the side and apex seals. also cover up all openings with plastic/rags or whatever.

Has the motor been stored in a good location and will it be while you store it? For example is the area clean and dry. Along with free from outside pests. I have had one used motor sit in a shop and mud wasps built a nest in the exhaust pipe.

Hopefully someone with direct experience with Mazda Factory motors will offer better info but hope this helps.

Urgent Engine Question

Thank you for your help! I sent the owner an email asking him the questions you provided. He responed as follows:

"a "short block" that comes with only housings and internals."

Correct, it is the short block only.

"secondly, motors are typically built using assembly lube and are ussually well preserved for storage."

Correct, but I do not know how long the assembly lubricants will keep it protected. I would think that has long as it has not been run, 2 years should not be a problem. All openings have been sealed with blue plastic plugs from the factory and I have stored it in my garage here in Arizona with a blue tarp sealed with string. I did not use plastic because it could result in condensation occuring.

If anybody else might know, I could surely use your help. The owner said I could have a week to check it out but, I'm lost as to how to proceed.

Thank you all again,

Nancy
