Are there any other motors that can go in a 2nd Gen?

As you can see I'm new to the site and I really need your help. My motor blew on my 2nd gen for like the 3rd time and I 'm tired of rebuilding it. The problem is I love my RX to much to just get rid of it. So as dumb as this might sound I was wondering just how many kits are there for the 2nd gen to be able to have a completelly different motor than a rotary? I've heard of putting a V8 in one, but just how many engine swaps are out there? If anyone has some info I would really appreciate it.

LS1, small block, sr20 would probably fit etc

However, they will all also blowup if not setup and maintained properly

If you blew the same engine three times, either there's something very wrong with your setup (like 15 psi of boost), or your tolerances are off when you're rebuilding. I picked up a used 13b engine for $200 when mine blew to put in while I rebuild the first one, so if you shop around you might be able to find a deal.

Thanks for all your help so far. Also, is there a way to put a SR20DET in an RX?

i dunno about the SR20DET. its awkwardly shaped. why not drop a 4g63T. that would be sick. those engines can make a lot of power and in such a light car. it could be a good thing. you would need to modify **** everywhere though

Why not a 4G63? Probably bc its a FWD engine...

jimmyh82:
The SR20 has been done several times...but its not easy. The LS1 swap has been done TONS of times and seems like a good alternative. As suggested, check out the "Other Engines" section for some ideas.

I was looking into a 300Z TT motor.. i'm not sure if it'd fit, but there not too expensive, and would be decently powerful.

Haha, yeah - except I don't think I'd include Mitsubishi engines anywhere on the reliability scale. And I don't mean this in a bad way but from talking to Chevy guys I know who have them, it's not that the LS1 is that reliable, but it's real easy to find parts for. SR20DET - isn't that a J-Spec motor? I know that's a popular mod for the 240sx crowd, and I don't know about reliable, but it seems like finding parts would be difficult. If you're looking for power, you could swap in a TII without much trouble at all - if you're looking for reliability, one of the big posters here rebuilds rotaries to spec for about $1000, which is not TOO much more than buying a rebuild kit, and much less than most engine swaps. Since he does it all day long, I'd imagine he's pretty good at it. You'd just have to pay freight to wherever, but all told, you're looking at $1500 or so for a well rebuilt Mazda engine that should give you tens of thousands of miles of useful service.

Again though, if you've blown 3 rebuilt motors, you might try to find the weak link somewhere in the car, because most people I've heard of get around 200,000 miles out of an N/A. Mine just blew a water seal and it's at 198,000, but it's had a hard life, too, apparently.

Or, if you're looking for reliability and don't care too much about performance, you can drop in a B16 and just have someone fabricate a mount for the transmission
Those things run forever!

An S2000 motor in an RX! That's pretty cool. I wonder how many other swaps there are?

this is true, but I'm looking for known swaps. What have people actualy done. I'm pretty sure you can put any motor in any car if you really wanted to.

This post and your thread question is counter to each other. The 2nd Gen RX7 is almost 20 years old. Almost every engine swap has already been done. There isno easy engine swap period. Switching a TII into a N/A is hard. If you want to go known, a lot of LS1's, 350's, and Cosmo's are popular. If you dont know personally about how to rebuild and fabricate for an engine swap, you will spend more money than the car is worth.

I'm just checking out my options. All I would like to know is who's done what or who's friend did what. Who knows, I might get a great idea for a swap. Plus, I never said anything about what's easy or what's popular. Just who's heard of it.

LS1 swap isn't hard. I would convseratively estimate that with the parts in front of me, it could be completed in 2-3 days with a friend or two helping. Body work is far more difficult then an engine swap.

I think that I'm going to try the LS1 swap, but that doesn't mean I want this thread to stop. If anyone else finds an RX with some other wild engine swap please post it. I still interested in seing some more swaps.
