Cool SR20DET FB... Out of the garage

As of 6:30pm 06/14/06 the heartbeat of my FB came way of a Nissan SR20DET, moved it out into the yard under its own power to clean the garage ~10:30pm.

I've kept mum on my swap... just wanted it done before I got hopes up. Took less than two months from delivery of my engine. Could have done it in a month if not for being sick for ~2 weeks and a trouble converting my carbed tank for FI.

This is the same car I had a Chevy 350/T-5 swap in, I sold that drive train to another member that seems to be having fun with it.

This pic is from when I first put it in. The rad. is from the Chevy swap... can be used but with the intercooler I used I swapped in a Volvo radiator.

I'm still waiting on some intercooler couplings that were supposed to be here Friday (two days ago) and I need to order some adapter for my gauges.

Not sure if I'll do a complete (or any) write up anytime soon, depends on the interest.

So yes, a SR20DET powered FB is on a street near you ... *if you live in MD anyway*

<--- Haha, Catonsville. Judging the response in the past 10min I think a write up is in order. The main issues are converting a carbed FB to FI and timing when to order parts... I'm waiting... some my fault others part suppliers.

MOST IMPORTANT... Thanks to those that help (they didn't know what I was doing at the time so don't burn them too, LOL)

steve84GS TII ::: He's posted how to convert a FB tank for FI using a FC pump. BIG help as I had no clue how I was going to do this.

CrashtestJoey ::: I didn't know a good driveshaft shop up here (I'm from NC) and he pointed me in the right direction. Top notch shop too.

Pele ::: For getting a "large flange" driveshaft to me so quick. Out of the, what I thought were spare shafts, they were all small flange.

Except the driveshaft, all bolts were turned, all things that need fab, were done by these hands.

Thanks to those few that knew the madness that was happening and giving me encouragement to get it done...

wow...congrats, yes i think a write up is in order ... seems that here in a month or so we will have sister cars...only difference being that i will have a ka24de in my car, and turbo'd soon after.

Few questions.
What rear end are you using?
interior wiring, did you just keep all the wiring in the stock fuse box for internal stuff, and engine stuff you hooked straight to the ECU, and only hooked up ignition?
What type of dash Cluster you using, S13 cluster? if so, did you make a custom dash, or did it fit in place?
might think of more questions later since im in the process of doing the swap right now.

You might want to fix the first 06 to an 05, otherwise you haven't actually done it yet.

So why did you chose the SR20DET? It is not really an obvious choice, IMO, as it never came to this country. Just curious really, not busting your ***** over it. If you did it just to be different, that is all you need to say.

i think i'll help him out on this one...this is why I would have done it...

#1 LOTS of aftermarket support
#2 High Revving
#3 Stock Turbo
#4 Somewhat cheap to modify
#5 capable of holding around 450whp with stock interals

This is just what i think of when i think of an SR...I personally own one also, so i know what there capable of.

Yep the exhaust is done. Keep in mind this is the first time I've done exhaust. I should have everything "Finalized" by this weekend so I'll take pics then and hope to have time to do a decent write up before then too.

Here is a post I made in the thread that got moved from the first gen section that answers the "why" behind it. Also, I kept looking at the date I wrote and I knew it didn't look right... I'd been under/over/in my car for ~16 hours and was very tired. So correction 05/15/06 an SR20DET FB came to life.

This swap is after having a Chevy 350/T5 in there for ~5years. Believe me, the last thing FB's need is alot of torque LOL.

When I think Buick 3.8turbo I think straigt line automatic tranny type "fun". Believe it or not though, I DO have a 2001 3.8GM v6 & T-5 in my SA right now. I stopped that swap because I think that's better suited for my toyota truck with a dead 22R in front of my house and I had to get another DD.

I went with the SR for these reasons

Driveability... so far it feels like my old -SE. Shifter feels good (for stock) and clutch pedal effort is like stock (using stock 7 MC and Nissan Slave... had to make a custom line for it)
Light wieght... as compared to my all cast iron SBC
It cost about the same or less than a good 13B Turbo swap (I was ***this close*** to going back to wankel power)
Gas milage... I'm trying to get this into my DD line up
And the aftermarket support is good now with dime a dozen SR/240s.

Guess that makes sense. Were someone to tell me that they wanted a turbo 2.0 engine, I guess my first choice would be the 4G63T. Sure it is not as easy to go RWD, but the engine is still produced, in this country in large quantities, the DSM knowledge base is awesome and while DSMs are generally regarded as not very well made, it is commonly held opinion that everything else will fail before the 4G63 even blinks an eye.

I guess since I am older and started playing with cars long before JDM engines became a legit, mainstream option for people, I don't think about them. I always look first and foremost at what I see on the road and know that they will be in the junkyard down the street too. Hence why I am using a Ford 302.

Cool project though. The more FBs on the road the better. Drop me a PM if you are interested in adding your car to the Pound on www.v8mongrel.com.

On the same token it was a toss up between the RWD eco-tech engine and the SR'. Eco-techs are pretty expensive and the OBDII turned me off... + not made for boost, yet from factory. You know eco-techs are going to be a dime a dozen in ~3 years though.

I've done allot, and I mean about 2 years worth research on putting a 4G63 in the 7 and have contacted people that have them in RWD chassis, a 510 mainly. But what I saw happening was one of the reasons I didn't like my SBC set up... with the way it needs to be put together there is to much to go wrong.

BTW... why a 4 banger, on the street in the real world I have more fun driving a high strung engine than a lazy v8. My chevy swap was freaking relentless, but where I live not much fun. They guy that has it now though seems to really like it, from my understanding he lives in a rural area.

it is an actual fact that the SR20DET engine can produce up to 500hp on stock internals. nissan over engineers their engines just like toyota did with their 2JZ. my local shop www.streetworkstx.com has a green 240 with an sr that makes around 380hp and its best time in the 1/4 was a low 12 with suspention setup for drifting until his wastegate vacuumhose blew off and ran unlimited(?) boost. there is video of it. i might also add that the oraange 240 has an RB25 from an R33 Skyline GTS-typeM and its all stock and he runs a consistent 13.1-.2's. dont underestimate the SR just because the motor is a 4banger doesnt mean it can handle power. reliably it can handle 450hp. but on 500hp youre starting to stress the crank...but there are some 240s in houston pushing a little over 500 on stock internals and just using an upgraded turbo, and ECU tuning, and injectors
