Engine's that will fit?

Are there any engines that will bolt right into an FB and its transmission without much work? I would assume from mazda? or maybe not...

Thanks,

Are you talking about using the FB's stock transmission or a replacement engine's transmission?

I've seen photos of people dumping in Chevy 350's and Nissan 240SX motors. Altho, this just takes away the entire being that is the RX-7.

The short answer is no. The closest engine to bolting up would be the 2.0L/2.2L engine out of a B2000/B2200 truck. Would bolt up to the transmission with the truck bell housing. Engine mounts would be different though. Its not a powerful engine though. A turbo version sits in the 626 so I suppose one could use that with a B2000 bellhousing but not sure what the point would be.

Lots of V8 swaps - search for Granny's speed shop for kits.

Think about the nature of rotary and piston engines. The eccentric shaft on a rotary is in the middle of the motor, while the crank of most piston motors are at the bottom. There are lots of packaging issues that make the conversion of a rotary to anything else a fair amount of work. It might be something that someone wanted to do for their own reasons and I have no problem with that, but it is a pretty unlikely thing to do temporarily. If you make a swap, it is likely the car will NEVER be changed back. Except for my car, of course, and that is a whole story in itself.

Rotary engines fit rotary trannies.....its as simple as that.
Engine architecture aside, the bellhousing pattern is unique to rotaries alone.
Just about any engine will slip into a 1st gen's bay, there is lots of room.Few will match the rotaries compactness and center of gravity though.

I think your missing the main factor.....and its not that an RX-7 MUST have a rotary in order to have a soul.... (to each their own, were all car people here)

The main thing to consider is this.....if you, yourself can plan and execute a non-rotary ENGINE transplant into an RX-7,then installing the TRANNY that is made for that engine, should be simple by comparison.
