Anybody see the new Grassroots Motorsports issue?

It has the 2005 Challenge in it where cars that were purchased + built for < $2005 compete in several events...

out of the 62 cars:

3 FC RX-7s

0 Rotary powered RX-7's

the #1, 4, and 21 ranked cars were all V8 powered 7's...

#1 was a 10AE w/ a Ford V8 in it
#4 was an 88 w/ a small block Chvey V8

and #21 was a 86 w/ a 89 crown vic (yes, CROWN VIC) engine / tranny.

Interesting facts from it:

The #1 and #4 place 7's both ran 11.6's in the 1/4 ( and were #3 and #2 respecticely in the drag race... only beat by a 1962 Fiat 118G that ran 11.46 with a chevy V8)...and only spent about $1900 in modifications.

Not a bad issue... i suggest that all you 'non-rotary' guys grab one!

There was actually supposed to be a rotary powered FC, but guess what??? It wasn't running by the time of the competition.

Add another one for the v8 Rx-7 guys.

LOL, we'll have to wait and see.

There have been rotary cars in the Sport Compact Car Ultimate Street Car Challenge (SCC USCC for future reference, LOL) that should have whooped on everything. Guess what? They never make it through the competions alive. Don't count your chickens before they're hatched.

I saw that last night....saw the 7 on the cover and was completely disappointed. They take the easy way out and stick in the pistons.

One of the guy in the challenge, Nick Nicase, used to race an Rx2...I picked up a ton of pieces from him some years ago

Who's up for making a car for next year!

For the racing they are doing in the challenge (road and drag) the more instant torque seems to be the way to go. A TurboII with Rotary did quite well two years ago...its all about the challenge $$ limit...rotaries love to eat $$

If it is the car I'm thinking about it was 3yrs ago.

The problem with almost ALL rotorheads entering a car is that they don't prep it well and mod too much.

Here is the car we built, it got 3rd place but didn't pull 11's. Overall the trip was a blast.

There will be at least 3 rotary cars next year: two rotary powered spitfires, one 12A and hopefully one TII, and the TII entered by the clemson autocross club.

The potential exists for a great challenge car with a rotary. A PP, Megasquirt injected, motorcycle TB'ed rotary would be hard to beat power to weight in a 1500lb car. The plain truth of the matter though, is a 5.0ford or SBC is very cheap, fairly reliable, and easy to make fast.
