He was gonna swap in a s4 with 13bgslse front cover for easy mounting and maybe throw on a turbo but I am trying to convince him to to buy a t2 motor that we can build on.

Seems like a lot of work for no gain except it being different.
Don't get me wrong it's nice to see someting different, but why?

I have a friend with a 97 4cyl S10 who just blew the motor. We are getting ready to swap a 6.0 chevy V8 in, JTR makes bolt in mounts cheap. Have you considered something like this? Double the power of that 13b your considering.

I actually saw a rotary S10, it was an S5 NA Into into a show truck with air bags or hydralics or something like that, the engine was kind of cool, but the rest of the truck was nasty looking IMO.

Seems like a lot of work for no gain except it being different
The 4 cly s10's came with under 120 HP BHP an S4 or S5 NA that runs well and has a nice header & exhuast can make 150-160 WHP, thats more than the 4cyl would ever likley make, thats hardly no gain. the real question is if that gain is worth the cost involved, if it could be done under 1500 (which seems likley) that would be a pretty good deal.

With that said I would rather have the chevy V8, at least in an s10

You don't really need the GSL-SE front cover to swap a 2nd gen engine into some random vehicle... the point of the GSL-SE front cover is to make it bolt into a 1st gen. But since you are having to make your own mounts anyway you might as well just use the stock ones on the 13B. The other thing you get is the SE distributor but don't worry about that, just use the stock 2nd gen ignition, it's better anyway.

I hate to say it but... unless you just want a rotary to have a rotary... the 350 swap will probably be better for you. Easier to fit and attach transmission/clutches, more power (unless you use a turbo or bridge rotary) and you won't give your local Chevy mechanics the heebie-jeebies.

I'd advise against the rotary swap. The S-10 is too heavy. You need torque which the rotary sadly lacks. Your s-10 4 cylinder has the same bellhouse pattern as the 60 degree Chevy v6's. You can bolt in a 3.4 lit from a Camaro with just fabbed motor mounts. The F-Body guys are all swapping out their v 6's for V8 so you could probably get a killer deal on a good used motor. Edelbrock even makes a carb manifold for it. The 2.8/ 3.1/ 3.4 are all the same. Now if you want weird, the Cadillac 4.5 aluminum block engine from the 80's also has the 60 degree Chevy bellhouse. It has such small ports that it can barely make 130 hp but it has torque galore and won't overwhelm your stock drive train. The pain is that it was strickly a FWD motor and will need custom everything to make it rwd. The Cad Northstar engines also have the 60 degree pattern but would be more expensive than a SBC.

If you are dead set on the rotary because its like free, you'll at least need to swap out the rear gears in your s10 to 4:10's or even 4:56 to get any fun out of the rotary swap. When you figure in that cost, the rotary isn't free anymore. My 0.02 is for the camaro V6.
