The first Savannas which were sold in Japan in 1971 would have had to been produced in late 1970
Are you sure about that? According to http://www.mazda.com/history/rotary/g2-2.html the 10A Savanna was introduced in Japan in September 1971, i.e. as a 1972 model. I would be surprised if non-preproduction cars were manufactured in 1970.

Yes, your absolutely correct. I was reading a press release and yes the Savanna was introduced in Japan in September 1971. Mazda would not introduce a 1971 model so late in the year. The cars produced in 1971 were 1972 models so the production fiqures would be for the calendar year. The total production in 1971 was 33,189 then it surged to 80,004 in 1972 for the 1973 model year when RX-3 exports were in full swing. This would also explain why I have no figures for 1978 because the 1978 models were actually built in late 1977. I think Mazda was ramping up production of the RX-7 in early 1978.

I fully agree. The RX-7, which in Japan was the 2. generation Savanna, was introduced in March 1978, so it appears most likely that no 1. generation Savannas were produced in 1978.

John,
Above you have posted production numbers for the Capella/RX-2 coupes and sedans from 1975-78 - do you have the corresponding numbers from 1970-74?

RE Matsuda,
Yea the filter goes directly into the turbo inlet a pipe. It's almost a straight shot.

The front airdam is peiced together from a few peices from other Japanese cars.. so it's custom.

Is anyone there in the US doing rotary conversions to the early rwd GLC. It is a very popular conversion here in NZ.
I'll have my one finished very soon.

Did the US get the 5-door hatch GLC (FA4 chassis)? I have a pretty sweet 5 door (rectangle front light 1980) and was wondering if you guys still or ever saw any of these?

Yes, we got the 5 door as well as 2 door and wagon versions. They sold loads of these cars. Hardly ever see them anymore. I had a brand new 1977 coupe. Good car but very slow. Cheap to keep though.
