What is this?..

Well I went out to one of the car yards that tends to have parts for more import parts out in there yard for longer then any of the other well know places. Only thing was, there was only 4 mazdas that I seen in that whole yard. So no luck finding any older mazdas for me, they had the 2 of frist gen rx7 and an 86 and a 87 there..

But anyways back to what I am about to ask. When I was looking over one of the frist gen rx7 in there yard. I came over something like this..
Its picked out with the red arrow pointing at it..

I am thinking it might be something like an oil coolers cuse of where its at and what it has on top of it also..

But I was thinking I would ask you all and see what you guys say about it..

these are oil coolers are water cooled.... as 12aPwr says, the early style (air cooled) are much better. These are handy in conversions if the front of the car is too cramped for a notmal cooler, or it is an oddly positioned fitment (into a beetle, for example).
