vw baja 13b powered?
vw baja 13b powered?
I have a 66 baja that has been using a carbed 12a(stock port) rotary for some time now and the power is awesome. Now I have found a 13b that is still in the car and runs very well. I can get it for next to nuthin and was wondering. Will the 13b bolt up to the 12a adapter? the book says it uses the same adapter. How much hassle is it to pull all the FI stuff? I want it to be clean and I want the FI for sure. I am tired of the hassle with carbs and the FI would be great. Also how hard is it to turbo the NA 13b? any engine pulling info would be great, thank you.
I see no reason why a B wouldn't bolt up to the same adapter. There might be some tweaking of the mounts required though.
What year car is the motor from?
Have you concidered rebuilding and porting your 12A (Bridge port
) and switching to a standalone FI system like a megasquirt? Now that would be bad ***.
Even if you swap the 13B in, a standalone will probably be less hassel and more worthwhile than the stock FI.

I belive the 12a to be getting tired, I have another 12a though, it only has 3000 after a rebuild. The megasquirt sounds great but wouldn't I be better off putting that on the 13b? I want to keep it simple as possible, it does see offroad use also. The 13b is a 86 looks complete and runs well, but has 120,000 on it, no smoke though.
In your situation I'd stick with a 12A instead of a six port B stom an S4. A 12A already fits after all. I'd pull the fresh 12A apart and port it, toss it back in, get a standalone and have an easy 200hp in a Baja Bug. Damn that sounds like fun!
Pick up the B if you want, but I would have long term trust issues with a 20 year old motor with 120K. Porting your low mile 12A would be cheaper than rebuilding your 13B.
Good luck, and post some pics if you get the chance.
