VIN question on old rotaries
Ok so Im starting the really pain in the *** process of getting a title for this basket case RX2 of mine. I pulled the VIN off the car and took it in to my local DMV. I got all the paper work for the title and then went to check with the local sheriffs office since they are going to inspect the car before deeming it road worthy. I showed them the paper work and they seem to think that the VIN I have isnt real. They said that there are supposed to be 13 characters for the older cars and this only has 10. Im positive this is a real number. Its on a plate on the door jam and its stamped on the firewall of the car. They said there isnt supposed to be a plate on the door jam that the older cars had them on the dash. Well there isnt a dash in this car it was ripped out. I personallyl think its correct. Does everyone else have 10 characters? Are there any other VIN besides the one on the door jam and firewall? Lastly does this sound like a correct number S122A96323?

My 74 REPU vin is a total of 11 characters, starting with PA then 9 numbers.
There is a number on the door jam and a plate on the firewall, nothing on the dash just like you state. If you look around more carefully under the car I think most cars have one somewhere on the floor pan
.
There were no federal standards for VIN numbers until 81, so anything before that can be any length. That is why 79-80 RX7's were SA22 and in 81 they became FB.

Vin
I did some digging:
I have a Georgia tag receipt for one of my old 1973 rx3's - It was F124A######
I have a SCCA logbook for another aprox 73 Rx3 - It was S124A######
I think the "f" was a typo on the one car but it looks to me you are missing a number.
I do remember the "cross over" guides that are floating around have some VIN stuff in the beginning of the book. Might be of some help.

Your VIN is on the data plate under the hood, on the passenger-side firewall, and inside the door jamb (those they're often missing by now). If all 3 are the same, just tell the Sherriff that it's what you got and is obviously right.

The hood is pretty effed up on the underside. I think there was an engine fire but I have the one on the firewall and the door jam.

Well there is a "1" stamped above it. Maybe somebody messed up on the stamping?

Dude, do your firewall VIN and data plate VIN agree? The firewall is always REALLY damn straight, and is the most reliable place to pull it. What do they both say?
