Thinking about buying RX-2, good project?

I walk past a 2 door RX2 everyday on my lunch break, it is parked and flat tires, original paint doesn't look like it has rust holes, but not clean and shiny. Pretty sure I could pick it up very cheap. I am thinking about leaving a note on it expressing my interest so I can get a close look at its condition, but have a few questions for you guys.
How hard would it be to put in the running gear from my wrecked 86 rx-7 into rx-2? Switch over front covers for engine mounting, right; but how well would the trans. fit in?
How hard is it to buy/convert upgraded brakes, suspension pieces to handle the extra power. Please help a rotary enthusiast w/ extra drivetrain laying around, thanks.

Well the second gen tranny is not a good fit from what I have been told. However, many (me) have used the stock tranny or gotten one out of a 1st gen 13b. The suspension is nothing hard... Koni and others make direct replacements. I am giong to be investigating upgrading brakes on mine shortly... I have heard it is not that hard to find a swap. HOWEVER, if you read my post below this one, you have to take into account that stock parts unrelated to drivetrain are VERY hard to come by. If you plan on gutting the interior and fabricting a metal dash, etc. then this isnt a problem, but finding stock or aftermarket replacements is awful. Good luck though, and I hope you decide to get it!

Thanks for the reply. The 2nd gen RX-7s came w/ 2 trans one for NA and one for Turbo. The NA one (available for my project) is a holdover from the 1st gen, so it sounds like it will fit? I Didn't even think of using the stock trans, duh. Good to hear suspension parts are available, brake swaps aren't usually too bad w/ a little help from a machinist. I will check it out for rust; I HATE RUST!

i used a 12a trany. and you have to switch the front covers like you mentioned. and the other problem will be your oil pan. use a gsl-se oil pan to get around the subframe. holes do not all line up so be careful. also will need to play around/ cut the pickup. you can use the stock motor mounts but not mounted the same way as w/ the 12a. loosen them up so the motor (being more forward) will slide ove it, then tighten them up. the one other problem will be w/ your trans.
it will make some noises grinding due to the other motor pushing it further back, but it just a piece that can be taken out. i used a holley 650 double pumper w/ mechanical secondaries for fuel. my one problem right now is getting the oil injector to work. i have the omp running wide open to the carb, and am having problems w/ it smoking, as the oil sits on the throtle plates until wide open throtle. the intake i made from a stock 6port intake and a homemade plate set up for NOS, but i have not hooked up the funny gas though. pm me w/ any questions

If you are able to get the then do so! I have owned 2 rx2's ... both four doors though, but they are sooo much fun to drive witha ported motor behind them.

Mine was previously running a gen1 box which was a little broken, and is now running a rx5 5 speed (US OLD Cosmo I think) which is a relatively easy bolt in.

I believe the s4 gearbox will fit but you will need different gbox cross members and possibly new clutch, flywheel and starter motor? .. not too sure

Let us know how ya go
