T2 Transmission in KE11

I'm looking for info regarding the shorting of the shifter on a t2 trans. We tried to install it in my "70" Corolla but it seems to be a couple of inches to long. I was informed that could be shorten about 4 inches so, that the shift box isn't so far back. Does anyone know anything about this modification ?
