I say go for it, but keep as much of the original stuff as you can intact so you have some chance of putting it back how it was in case you need to someday.

"Keeping it original" is taken too far sometimes though, and when seats and carpet get worn out, by all means replace them. That's just maintenance IMO. Nobody at car auctions complains that the car no longer has the original battery and oil.
