RX2 Oil Cooler

Hey guys I have a oil cooler that I think came off a REPU (not sure) and I want to first find out if it is infact a REPU oil cooler, or if those oil coolers were the same between all the early rotary cars. also how does the oil cooler mount onto the RX2? Thanks

a RX-2 has different oil cooler as the oil t-stat/bypass is located in the inlet fittings, not in the bottom of the cooler as the later oil coolers. Use plumbers tape to mount it.

Are you running a stock RX-2 radiator or is still RX-4/SA/FB style?

yes the oil coolers are often shared across models of early RX

and your question is leading,,
as you haven't told us if you have the original crossflow rad,,
or the later AP one seen in other markets with rx2 going to 1978 ( and 1979 in SA )

early TD ones are pressed steel ends , 6 rows and without bypass thermostat =
there is flat brackets under the cross-flow rad ( parallel with road )
and similar on the oil cooler
rubber bonded sectioned bolts between

later SD ones are all alum and use the bypass thermostat ,, and hang from down-flow radiator using same rubber sectioned bolts
but this time hanging from vertical and not horizontal straps from the radiator

Its going to be using a original Radiator (when I got the car it did not have a radiator, the one i have was one that a contact sent to me from the parts he had left of his RX2, and the oil cooler came with the car but the previous owner told me that it came off a Mazda truck) . the whole drivetrain will be original including the twin dizzy, sorry that I forgot to mention this.

if you want the original OC, lmk. I'm currently using both RX-2 radiator and oil cooler (with t-stat removed) in one of my RX-3. If you want the cooler, LMK as I will be switching back to a 3-row FB radiator and RX-4 oil cooler (it has an extra row for better oil cooling).

I'll PM about the RX2 Oil cooler soon, the one in the pictures is what I have, does it look like a REPU one? and just to clarify is a RX4 oil cooler the same as a REPU oil cooler?

Thanks

yes that is similar to an "AP" SD rx2/4 style oil cooler
there is differences in the number of rows between some cars
though generally the later rx2/3/4 ones are all the same length
,, but the thermostat is the give away as a later AP one

unusual mount bracket,,, most have vertical type mounting plate onto the rubber joiners form the radiator
( early ones have the horizontal mount )
so appears the ute one is sort of in between ,, old mount system but modern style cooler

remove the t-stat and soak it in a hot tank to ensure that the fins are not falling apart. Them pins re=route the air to the core for cooling and its best to leave the core unpainted.

FB vs RX-4 (bottom)
