Rx2 Braking problems (12a streetport)
Rx2 Braking problems (12a streetport)
I have had the car for a year and spent much of that time trying to get the brakes to work better. It has an 84-85 rx-7 12a engine that has been streetported and running duel exausts (almost no backpressure), 48ida weber downdraft carb and mostly stock brakes. I have new pad and shoes. New rx-7 first Gen. finned drums. Has stock rotors, not sure of the vintage but they were in good shape when I got the car. I also got another brake booster off a parts car and still not much improvement. The last thing we tried was replacing the rubber brake lines with braided stainless lines. This helped and now the car feels like it has good brakes but still doesn't feel like it has power brakes. We have checked the brake booster and the vacume lines to the booster and they are holding vacume. Now I am thinking that it's the streetport. That maybe the porting has reduced the vacume from the engine. Anyone out there know for sure? Can anyone offer me a solution? There is a check valve in the intake manifold where the booster lines attach. Maybe taking that out will help? Although i would think that would increase the risk of gas or oil from the carb macking into the line. ? Any help would be a appreciated and If you could give me Dollar amount if the solution is pricey that would be great.
Thanks, -Kevin.
Thanks, -Kevin.
Already installed a rebuilt brake master cylinder and replaced all the gaskets on the intake and exaust to be sure it wasn't losing vacume anywhere. By the way, I know first gen drums will fit the rx-2. Anyone know if first gen rotors fit as well? I was considering trying a slotted and cross drilled rotor up front. Anyone have succes with them?

I got the rebuilt master cylinder from Napa auto parts. They charged me a core deposti charge I havent' taken my old one in to get it yet but I would assume they can send another one out to be rebuilt. My step dad went in and looked at pictures of what they could get and had in stock country-wide and the one that matched was from an rx-4 and they sent it to California from Pennsylvania or where ever thier warehouse is (took more than a week to get it in). There's a guy in L.A. that claims he rebuilt one using a rebuild kit for an '84 rx-7. He caims they are the same internaly. I don't know, maybe someone here would.

Wait, why a WRX? You should test dive a Mazda speed3. I know people who have and they say it is downright scary.
