RX-8 rotors

Hey, are the rotors in the RX-8 not the same shape as in previous rotaries? I just got the RX-8 CD and the rotor looks kinda funny.

You guys knew this question was going to come up, so i'll ask it (though i don't have any plans of doing this) can those rotars fit in the 13b-rew?

krackerx7:
there is an rx-8 promotional cd that you can get from the mazda website.

The question asked over and over again... the answer is "Wait until people actually have engine parts in hand"

Well it is a N/A engine with a higher compresion ratio if i remember from some of the tech articules (not rock solid) that its 9.5-9.8:1 I don't know but thats around most of the claims. Even 9.4:1 is pushing it with a turbo'd engine. Yes they are lighter they might be stronger too. But even now we don't even know what kind of apex seals are in them (what size, material, # of peices) for all we know they could launch out of the perifial exhaust port on a non-renesis engine and kill you turbo ( because the renesis exh ports are on the side the seals don't need to pass over a port and can be made with that in mind) I could see using them in a N/A all-motor car but not in a turbo, I don't like having to run 104 octane all the time.

From what I've read, there isn't an overlap in the exhaust and intake stroke like in the current rotary engines. If the engine is any taller this would change the Generating Radius which is the distance from the center of the rotor to the apex.

There is no overlap because the exhaust and intake ports are on the side That way the ports are closed by the rotor, instead of the apex seal. This alows the ports to be bigger and better emmisons are achived.

Regardless of port location, if the Generating Radius has changed, then the Renesis rotors will not fit in current production rotary engines, thus answering the original question. It is very well possible that rotors, housings or plates will not be interchangeable, but there is also a chance that they will. If they don't the next step would be to swap a complete Renesis into an RX-7, which will lead to more questions like mounting locations, tranny bell housings, fuel pump delivery capability. We all have to wait and see.

Its not likely that the renesis has a different generating radius because then they would have to completly retool not just partialy if they kept the same radius.
They have experimented with different G-radius in the past (The 21A) And they were more expensive to produce because the housings were taller and wider than the 12A so it was never produced. Its the same with the renesis, they probly wouldn't risk screwing up the formula that they already know works.
