Does the noise continue through the whole pull or just happen for a second or two?

It only does the knocking noise at approximately 10lb boost for just a second or two. Rest of the pull is perfect...

Someone said it could be a timing issue. Have to look into that on my microtech

What is your boost set at right now? Do they waste gates open at exactly 10lb? If so try to lower the boost a pound or two and see if the noise is still present with the lower boost setting.

I played with the timing and it helped. With light tuning and some timing changes the noise dissappeared on 10lbs for a while. Tried a few second gear pulls and the noise was still there. More tuning and it should be fixed I hope! Will upload pics and a vid when the thing is running properly Watch for updates!

I would upload a new vid for everyone but not much has been changed. Good news is that the timing is retarded enough that the rotor knock only appears at 14 lbs (which is now my boost cut so it doesn't matter) and if I try a hard pull in 3rd gear at 20 mph up a hill. So I think it's squared away :p . Been trying to drive the bug around town to find the little quirks. The suspension is rock hard even with my soft coilovers I will never do urethane on a bug again, its way too stiff for my street driving. The car gets good power if I hold the throttle at half and watch the boost come in slowly through the rpm. If I wide open throttle 10 lbs hits before 6k and its time to shift... I am not sure if my greddy bov is set right, its on the softest setting to see if it will pop at my desired 13 lbs before the bst cut and I dont hear it or feel it doing that. Maybe I am trying to use the bov the wrong way. (any help in that area would be great as im a newb to these gadgets)

Other than those minute issues the car does run pretty solid. Until 185f water temp. For some reason every time i drive the car for about 45 minutes and the temp reaches 184-5 ish my wideband innovate guage flashes 7.4 (just like it does when I first turn on my microtech and power and fuel pump to prime the engine for first start). The temp does not increase much after the 7.4 "primer mode" and I do not feel any bogging or power changes... Have not run it long in this period to check for fouled plugs which would tell me that it actually is running rich or not. As soon as I turn the car off and on the "primer mode" is immediately gone. Anyone know what this is? or if its a setting in the microtech that I need to change?

I will post that last paragraph in the micro forum for more help as well.

Blow off valve only opens when the throttle plate is closed, i think.

Your wideband is on the way out. Innovate widebands are notorious for breaking.

If you want to cut boost at exactly 13 pounds you should get a waste gate and just set it to open up at 13 pounds that way you can still power through the gears and your boost wont go any higher then whatever its set at.

So for the long awaited update :p With college and college finances, the bug has been neglected some... So after reading up to properly finding true tdc on the engine I gave it a whirl. I pulled the pulley and found 9 o clock for the hey. Put the pulley on. Attempted to place the CAS in. Timed it according to microtech's manual. Went into the microtech software, seemed my timing functions like the static function was set at zero so no retardation could occur under boost >.< Drove it around and set the timing settings all below 10 degrees under boost. And guess what, no more knocking, and instense power increase! Also just found out my cyberdyne gauges are discountinued and I had the hardest time locating the fuel gauge for my car. ugh. The next thing I will be looking at is an aftermarket wastegate and finding where to plumb it in on my tubing :p

You guys have any ideas of a wastegate (and what mm size) for my setup that is around 200 bucks?

I only need to install a new window regulator as mine broke, windshield squirters which i can steal from my dad's honda eg6 clip (he is doing a b16 swap into his classic mini cooper), and paint the deck lid to cover the engine and she can be driven.

My video camera sucks right now, will try to get pics or videos soon.

Latest (lame update cause of no pics) update:

I found a cyberdyne gauge, ended up shipped broken. Sent it back, buying another I found on egauges and that will be here in a week or two. Bought an AEM water injection kit. Car is taken apart interior wise to fin places to mount the pump. The plastic container the kit came with I pulled all the fittings out. Took an old fire extinguisher emptied it out. Going to use all of the fittings on that and attach the tank to the roll cage, will be sick and discreet once tapped and fitted . Drove the car around with my new manual boost controller. Tuned to 12psi so far, reaching 14 soon. I haven't even reached past 6k before I'm excessively speeding in 2nd gear... has a lot of power haha. Bought a new camera yesterday so I'll get pics up I Promise. It's in pieces right now but soon it'll be ready for some road tuning and eating tons of gas again lol. And I need tabs and a plate to be legal....

After some account issues. My "lilsht" account is now blended with the "RotorsRulePistonsDrool" account. All updates and pictures will be uploaded from this new account here forth.

This is why the new pics I uploaded to the forum were lost in translation. Will post up pics of the latest stuff today. (browser takes forever to upload multiple)

As for a written update:

Many things are going on at once right now in hurry to get this thing rolling again. The passenger side tail light broke because when I rolled the bug out the land cruiser's bumper was right in the way and smash... Ordered up some different lights, half semi-smoked and half red. I rewired and installed the lights and they work and look cleaner. Pics later of course! My dad is helping me fix a wiring mess in the back. My Innovate wideband needs to be recalibrated (error 8 pops up) and wired to microtech for afr readings. My chinese backup sensors need to put into the holes drilled to my bumper. My water/meth injection needs to be finished. Took an old fire extinguisher and emptied it out, prepped, fitted and painted it black. Before clear coating it, I threw in the aem sticker to see what it looks like. Looks alright in the end! That tank will be attacked to the passenger side roll cage. Lines ran to pump and to the car. And the boost safe wire to microtech wired in (waiting to turn it back on to set the retard function up), and my new fuel gauge is wired in, just need LED's and the gauge mount and I'm set. Put the car backtogether and test drive.

Anyone know where to buy Methanol in Washington? No hot rod shops in Everett sell it....

And here are the pics, the big headaches should be finished in, idk 2 weeks time, and then I go to find methanol and start her up and see what kind of timing I can run now.

Sorry for bad quality pics, camera isn't very good. But here is the latest picture update. Hope you guys like it. More updates when some actual progress is made!

UPDATE: I finished up the methanol injection, everything plumbed and working properly. But while installing the injector on the manifold I accidentally put too much pressure on my intercooler causing one of the 8 rubber isolation mounts to tear. Just another thing to replace now lol. I finally found methanol at a local diesel truck outlet in 5 gallon drums 5 min from house so I'm set now. The injection is 2 inches from throttle body begin spraying at 4 psi and full at 14. My timing under boost has increased a few degrees from -6 at 14 psi to around -3. Everything runs fine. I put the car back together after figuring out that wire mess. Then realized my Innovate wideband gauge wouldn't read afr and flashed 7.4v the whole time. But hooked up to the laptop it worked. Checked wiring and found out the gauge hookup to the lc1 controller had been snipped on accident. So I had to tear car all the way apart again to fix that but runs now. I haven't driven too much because it isn't insured yet. Hagerty wanted pics of the car to get an estimate of insurance rates so I just did that as well. I got my new spanner wrenches and raised the rear end a little bit. As much as I want the car to be dropped on its nuts my custom exhaust and water lines have been scraping a lot so I had to raise about an inch to clear the evil driveway and speed bumps. Also made a new aluminum gauge mount with wrinkle finish for my long awaited fuel gauge (PS it says how many gallons but really says how long until my pocket book will suffer again next tank lol) Once insured in the next few days, a driving vid will be posted. Pic of the gauge mount later tonight!

OH

Great build I been working on something similar for the last 3 years. Ran a 12a for a while, then I wanted a renesis but realized that I got 500 hp rated axles and renesis don't go that hi on hp. So I swapping a 93-95 turbo. Hopefully will be pushing those axles to the limit here soon.

Datfast1: Thanks, will do get those pics when it stops raining outside
Joselo: Renesis interests me as it makes near 240 horse NA, the fd/cosmo engine is a tight fit as you can see from my build :p

UPDATE: Here are the pics of the new fuel gauge mount I made and installed. Sorry for the wait, procrastinator...

and with the gauge on. It says 07G, means 7 gallons btw.

Been snowing/raining heavily for the past two weeks. Waiting for my new hagerty insurance to arrive before I seriously start driving it and putting miles on it.

Went to the PNW Springmeet for volkswagens and showed the car off. Went pretty good overall. 9/10 ppl thought I did a subie swap. I said no, the rotary eats subaru's haha. One guy said he saw my bug on youtube and was waiting for another updated video. Instead the real thing showed up lol. I need to update this thread as well. My buddy has a gopro I will try to borrow so I can get a driving vid of it for everyone.

Long time no see...

My friend hasn't given me his gopro yet so no videos yet sadly. I will just tryo to buy a suction mount for my regular sony camera and mount it in the car if my friend is still a flake about the gopro.

But anyways, the car has slowly been finishing up. I just installed new front hood shocks to replace the squeeky springs and now the hood opens and closes perfectly. I just received my new race weight fiberglass rear apron and rear decklid. Just need to mold my other hood into the new one to make it twice as big to fit the intercooler and paint it up. I added some spacers to the rear wheels to push them out more and the camber brings them back inside the fender well so no scraping aound bumps. I need tiny spacers for the front to get a little more clearence from rubbing on my swaybars. I have approximated my MPG to be around 11 freeway and city combined... I have confirmed that my volkswagen can beat a 19 psi evo 8 with only 2nd gear... And I took the bug to the local cruisin colby car show 2012 which is 5 mins from my house and I was able to park in VW Alley (a whole block dedicated to vw's) of the car show. Went great, a lot of ppl like the car, some were bashing on the rotary with the usual no longevity no torque blah blah blah. Except in reality the 1.3 can take any of their v8's lol.

And here is a pic of me and the car for just an update till I get a damn video setup:

I was actually able to change some hardcore datsun to get rotary engine for there 510, roadsters and 1200. Yah no torque but all top end Bro! Nice job on your VW lots of mod and Fab. Awesome VW hobby!

Wow, love that datsun. The 2 door 510's are quite rare and spendy where I live. Great Job, and how much horse is that cosmo putting out? I have been wanting to get another cosmo engine for my bug and rebuild it as backup as they seem to be getting harder to find and try a streetport out but haven't gotten one just yet.

UPDATE: Well it looks like I will have a little work on my hands. My new camera mount came in the mail and I mounted the camera to my window and realized that the whole setup is too jittery and any bumps or vibrations made my video really shaky... Need something else now. Worst part is that on my drive around town I realized that a few problems had occured. After a big 2nd gear pull I noticed my gas gauge dropped like 2 gallons. After 10 more minutes I saw a flashing low on the fuel gauge and ended up trying to get to a gas station/home and I died. Went to check the car and noticed a bunch of issues. I walked to the front of the car and saw that my supposedly high pressure fuel injection line was bubbled and burst. This caused fuel to flow all the way under the bug and took my undercoating and black paint to splash the exhaust, tranny, axles, bumper, engine, coils, and my fenders. Needless to say this gooey tar mess on my paint is starting to come off with dx-330 and a good polish so I will get it shiny again soon. One of my radiator mounts broke, so I will weld that back up. And I think the engine torque/or bad luck killed the oil pan gasket. So it is also leaking... I will be cleaning it all up, re undercoating, fixing the paint, fix the radiator mount, and I will invest in a Banzai racing cosmo 13b oil pan brace and a gasket. Plus a new camera mount haha. Stay tuned!
