Original RX-5/Cosmo RE-130

This has got to be the nicest RX-5 I have ever seen. This is the JDM version of the RX-5. I found it on a local internet auction site.

Very clean car!
Would not mind having one like that.

What was the price?

Looks familiar/similar AP120

Couple of pics of mine this is an AP120, unfortunately the previous owner removed the 12a and installed a US Spec 13B but at least he did the entire conversion, this thing has all of the emissions and original type exhaust for a cosmo everything works and I did get it with original 12a AP intake carb emissions and exhaust pieces so I can convert it back. When i purchased this one in 2001 I paid $3,500USD for it

^Umm... don't know how to break this to you, but the 13B is what came standard in the RX-5 Cosmo here in the US. If there ever was a 12A in the engine bay you should be happy it's gone. Putting a 12A in such a heavy car would be a waste of time and resources.

Sounds like the original owner was BS'ing you and it's just the same old 13B w/ emissions that's always been there. LOL!

Sounds like you know everything Just 5 things for you.

#1 You are rights every 76-78 Cosmo that came standard to US came with a 13B that would be roughtly 9k of them in 76, 400 in 77 and 400 or so in 78
#2 NO RX5s ever came standard to the US
#3 The particular car I am referring to is not a US SPEC COSMO its a JDM Car
#4 In JAPAN the COSMO WAS AVAILABLE IN DIFFERENT TRIM LEVELS/ENGINE LEVELS, JUST LIKE OTHER ROTARY VEHICLES.
#5 MY COSMO IS AN AP 120 NOT AN AP 130, THE 120s came with the 12a, the 130s came with a 13b. This is evidenced by the Vin # on 13b cars it starts CD23C, on 12a cars it starts CD22C (mine starts CD22C)

The current engine is not an original Cosmo engine because it hsa rotor housings from a GSL-SE

Be careful who you try to show up to when you don't know what you are talking about.

I don't know everything but I know more than most, and when it comes to my vechicles I do my research. Last item I seriously doubt that there is anybody in the US that owns as many Cosmos as I do, nor has the amount of information I do about them.

Rotarydude, gimme a break. You live in the US and I see "TEXAS" plates on the bumper; naturally I'm going to think it's a USDM model Cosmo. Maybe you should have clarified it was an import model.

Yeah, I know that Japan and other markets got the Cosmo w/12As and 13Bs. You're not speaking to any Mazda rotary noob here either, so chill. Never claimed I was an expert either.

Now that I take a 2nd look, I see that it's a right hand drive model. Great for you! Pat yourself on the back... either way, you still have a very un-desirable car amongst the Mazda old school crowd here domestically. It's going to be hard to recoupe your investment on it so I hope you really love it.

If you aren't a noob don't act like one, and if you really have been around as long as you say & have a couple of old school cars then have respect for other ones. Although it is undersireable to you there are plenty of others out there that do want them. And I am sure that there are some cars you want that I have no desire for.

Is this brutal and nasty yes why because your post made me look like I was an idiot for your mistake. I came back with nasty message because I thought you were a jerk. You got offended just like me and made a pissed off retort and felt that you just had to keep prodding with a stick though with that last little bit. So here we are with me posting again and now we both look like idiot 5 year olds squabbling in the friggin school yard. Real mature for a couple of members that aren't new. How can we expect this forum to be place to trade positive information if two old timers keep having pissing contests. Can I be wrong yes and when I am I own up to it, I shouldn't have been so nasty in my first post for that I was wrong. I would ask that you look a little closer before you hit the submit button.

^Word. He's got a point! I may not be a fan of that particular model of Cosmo, but it's still from the old school Mazda era (chrome bumpers and carburetors plus pre-RX7) so that alone makes it pretty unique in car culture.

Rotarydude, I'm sure we would get along if we ever met and have more in common than not. Unfortunately, sarcasm and whit don't always translate well in text when written on the net. No worries, consider it squashed.

Yep, Dave knows his stuff. We've been friends for years (fellow serious collectors tend to find each other). We talk shop quite regularly. And he does have more Cosmos than just about anyone else. I recently donated two of mine to his collection and am going to be acquiring a really nice one from him here soon (he doesn't know it yet, but he's donating that one to my collection... ).

VERY nice RX-5 there TK! With me being the more **** retentive stock collector that I am, I told Dave years ago I was jealous of his AP120 not because it was a RHD Japanese model, but because it was an Anti-Polluting model, and a 120 at that! I personally love the aesthetics of the RX-5 body style, and I tend to really go for the 'orphaned' ones- the ones most folks don't like, and I think the AP models definitely fall into that category. I have only had four US-Spec RX-5 bodied Cosmos over the years, and now that my most recent two are gone, I'm really missing them in a big way. Can't wait to finally have a really nice one (hint, hint, Dave).

Nice car again... wish it were Stateside.

Neal.

in more generation's than one.
the rx-5 was the gen 2 cosmo.
I had a Gen 3 hb cosmo coupe, a 1984 model. With a stock 12A turbo it was Japan's most powerful production car at that time.

My most memorable rotary I ever had.

No one else seemed to like it.

I understand I would like to get and add an HB to my collection as well.

The part I find funny is even though it seems no one likes them ( of course most won't buy them) everyone seems to have a cosmo story, usually goes like this my buddy, brother, sister's nephew, crazy uncle, dad... had one and they were such a smooth ride, if only the styling had been just a little different but man did it drive nice........

I was confused if it is the same one?? Looks the same, the first time it was for sale the seller was in Palmy (but the pic could be Hagley park in chch), now it is down south??? Should get reasonable dollars - $12K is my guess ;-)

yea I was unsure at first if it was the same car too but after comparing a few pics I'm sure it is. $12K you reckon? sounds about right, but my guess is it will probably go a bit cheaper.
