The easiest way to lift the tar, is buy a butane torch, melt it and with a spatula it comes up like butter. Trust me you'll be done in 30 minutes! Good luck and nice find.

Damn freddy 1 day to late finished the chiseling last night.. I kept eveylast piece we chiseld out I want to weigh it tonight and see how much all that crap weighs.

OK so checking out the car some more last night I come to find the transmission sort of suspect... It is very hard to put it in gear you can wiggle the car around and get it to go into each diffrent gear but it is hard.

Now I have a SA, G, GS, GSl and GSL-SE one of these trannys must fit in this car without too much hassle.. Also has anyone ever put a 3rd gen 13b and tranny in one of these cars?

Theres one for sale on the canadian for sale and it is definatly an interesting swap idea...

The SA tranny is a direct bolt in so it will also give you a 5 speed, if you change the tailshaft housing or shorten up the shifter any of the other 4 will fit also do a search it is common for people to put a T2 tranny in the old school and they have to do the same thing. I wouldn't say the tranny is suspect yet unless it is doing that with running engine but I would also suspect the clutch and hydraulics first

Sweet The SA tranny I have is in perfect shape and yeah I may not even **** around with the stock tranny and just go with a 5sp.

The car only has 70,000miles on it so I be the clutch and hydraulics are the problem. Especially seeing that he clutch resivoir doesnt hold fluid for more than 5 mins

OK so the whole car is stripped down to nothing. Motor is out, fenders are off and interior is stripped out. Ready to start gringing out the surface rust and paint the interior tub. Round a little rust under the battery tray where it has become a hole and a small hole starting in the frame rail above the front crossmember. All in all not too bad.

Does anyone know how to test a windshield wiper motor?

Here are some current pics of the car as she sits right now.

floor tar is pretty much all gone

Empty engine bay and the motor

More motor and a shot of my make shift man cave

No the bad... here is the rust I have run into
Driver side frame rail needs alot of work as well as the fender under the battery tray.

Under the tray

Frame rail

The leakey master cylinder and clutch cylinder.. I suspect these to be the rusting culprite

Brake fluid was all over in the drivers rocker panel too and it is very rusty as well

Passenger side is in good shape under the hood just a little surface rust

Wow thats alot of pics I had stored up! Enjoy, Only things left to strip is the dash board and the brake/clutch cylinders and steering box. All that has to come out to fix the drivers frame rail

Yeah pm me when your back and I will give you a call. I am pulling the tranny as soon as I get a chance this week.

I have a sand blaster now so this week I will be dropping the tranny, finish pulling the dash, clear the firewall of brakelines, booster and clutch resivior so it can be blasted this weekend. I have never blasted before so this will definatly be a learning experience.

Pics to come

Hi There

Just a quick warning about sand blasters if you have not used one before...Don`t get to close to the metal it will heat up and warp horribly.I have seen people ruin nice parts holding the nozzle to close and holding it in one spot to long.

I just don`t want you to make a easy mistake .

If you have used one before...well nevermind me!

Thanks for the heads up. I have never used a sandblaster but my nieghbour use to own a sandblast busiess so he is going to help. I think we are going to use baking soda for panels and sand for frame and sever rust

Nice find! Yeah soda blasting the panels for minimal pitting would be the go - I don't know too much but have seen bad results on old rusted beasts being sandblasted.

OK so I was going to try sand blasting this weekend but my nieghbour said I should wait and he will show me how to do it right. So we kept tearing at the car this weekend. Pulled the tranny, steering rack and box, wiring, clutch cylinder and most of the brake assembly.

Is there any intrest in parts like stock heat shields and little bumperettes? If there is I will start a for sale thread.

any how heres a couple more pics.

Has anyone on this site ever fitted SE front suspension into one of these cars? Is all I need to finish the install is a set of re-speed camber plates?

The rear will be easy just weld spring perches onto a SE rear axle and cut off all the link mounts

All you should need are the caster/camber plates to put the front suspension in so the alignment angles can be corrected. Is the GSL-SE rear end the same length as the stock Rx-4? I haven't measured mine yet to see. That was going to be my winter project.

I havent measured I was just going to cut the tubes if needed and get custom shaft made.. but I am hoping it is close to the same width so any diffrence can maybe made up in back spacing of the rim or such
