My RX3 - from rust bucket to now. On going project

Here is some pics showing the progression of my 1972 RX3. I drug it out of a feild for the low price of $200. I literally had to drag it by a rope behind my truck till I could get it near the road to winch it up on my trailer.

Yeah defitately looked like something was making a home of that thing. At least all the glass looked to be in good shape. considering that all the lights had been busted out. maybe the kids with the base ball bat couldnt swing hard enough to break it. Pretty cool to see another old school rotary being brought back to life. Looks like fun too. Nitrous baby!

I dont know why it sat so long. The last time it had been registered was 1980. He told me that they drove it as a family car, then one day just parked it and never came back to it. When I started tearing it apart, it looked like a mouse lived in the air filter box, and millions of bugs were inside. It was full of about 1.5 inches of dirt too. Dirt EVERYWHERE. Up under the dash, under the carpet, everywhere. Somebody had dropped rocks on the hood, putting creases in it, and somebody had walked on the roof. I had to have the roof heat stretched to get the dips out of it. The car took alot of body work, and once it got to a marginally acceptable level, I took a break and started working on the engine. Thats why she is primer black and doesnt have all her trim pieces.

Thumbs up

Your car looks incredible. The more old school rotaries I see, the less I want to tub mine. I got my rx2 for $300, it sat in a feild for 5 years, but it was on a cement slab. Keep up the great work, people admire cars that go through transformations like that.

Here is a clip of it running. It is from earlier this year, when I still ran a Weber.

Awesome job! This looks like it's going to be a priceless gem when it's finished.

But ya gotta get rid of that useless Fram oil filter. I'd rather pour sand into my engine than use one of those after reading about all the problems with bits of paper and glue from the filter floating around in the engine and plugging vital oil passages.

Anything less than a Wix, AC Delco or Purolator filter just doesn't do this car justice. My $0.02.

Doc,

Great job! If I were you I would tried and re route your fuel lines. Your are asking for trouble the way you have them set up. Too much heat from the exhoust ports and headers. I would also tried to install a heat sheal as well.

Cheers

Start here:

Most of these filters (Fram) will turn out to be ok, especially if you live in the warmer climes. But it's that small percentage that fail that we end up hearing all the horror stories about. For the extra two bucks I'll stick with the more reputable brands. It's very cheap insurance.

Llihemi looks like a Honda driver to me! You can't beat factory Mazda oil filters for quality...

Yeah that's a fat *** RX3! One thing though, why go from webber to holley? I always found the down draft webers to be a better carb...unless of course it's modified holley from racing beat? Sounds great though...reminds me of my yester years with that thumpin idle!

Lil Hemi is just giving me crap. He is a local freind of mine with a old school colt with a Mitsu 4G63 engine in it. We are buddies. No harm done.
You are right though Lilhemi, I guess these pics on this thread are kinda old, I should post some of the new ones.

I changed to the Holley so I could run a simple nitrous plate kit. I've enjoyed the holley since and I'll never look back.
