My rx-3 resto project... it's hard to restore your daily driver

Here's a couple pics of my 78 rx3 sp. I'm debating which direction to go from here. I think I'm going to make molds of the bumpers and run fiberglass bumpers. Maybe carbon fiber. Also, after molding on my front splitter, I had a little encounter with a steep entrance and cracked 2 of the 4 molded on places . That set me back a week or so. So here's what it looks like with my intercooler wedged in there just for kicks (the swap is set to begin in a week or so).
I was really wanting to just smooth the entire front clip with glass and do the same to the rear, but it looks like the cops in my area have nothing better to do than pull my *** over for stupid stuff like that.
Anyways, criticism is good. But keep in mind, I just graduated high school and have no prior body work experience. I also work 50+ hours a week and spend the rest of the time glassing and sanding the little orange bitch. I'm trying...

Looking good so far man. I really dont car for old stuff that is that new where you have to runn it though DEQ. But I never new they made them tell 78 or even higher then that.

But you got a nice look car there. I bet over time it will look really killer. I my self am looking in to getting me a rx3 also. I know where there is one just setting. Well should say I think it is a rx3 anyways. here are some pics. tell me what you guys think. Where it is at, its been setting from some time and the guy that has it is really old. So i think i can get it for a song and dance..

I really hope you post more pics as you go along with it. I love seening the older stuff like this poping up

Very cool! Looks to be in pretty great shape for it's age already. It's lucky to have a home with someone who cares enough to keep improving on it's condition.

Let me know if you get sick of her. I'd love to have me an RX-3 SP. I'm going to begin hunting for one in earnest right after the RX-8 is in my garage. You never see vintage rotaries in Minnesnowta, other than the occasional 1st gen RX-7 or the car's in Morrie Wagener's (Mazda dealer) collection...

Oh, and one more thing! ;D Criticism: keep it stock looking. They are rare enough to look different already, and have classic '70s lines. Besides, it's cooler to have a '70's "sleeper" with a turbo under the hood than it is to have a gaudy street rod looking thing with a turbo under the hood.

I was just wondering dude, don't worry I won't buy it out from under you or anything. I think that is wrong. But, if you decide not to buy the car PM the details on where it is so I can check it out.

Thanks,
Isaac

I belive I can get that RX3 for a song and a dance. The guy that owns it is in his late 60s I belive.. so I think I can get it for nada thing.

That car sits around 6 or 7 minis and some other diff cars also. I would take the minis over the rx3 but those are one of his sons and he is 40 something and thinks they are worth some money but they are not..

How far is Clackamas from Eugene? Sorry but I have a poor sense of direction.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. I've started pulling molds off the front and rear bumpers so I can avoid getting pulled over once a week and drop 150 lbs. Also, the SP bumpers stick out way too far, so I'm going to have the sucked into the body more and the position and shape changed a little bit (the front bumperwill cover all the gap in the front clip between the top and the intercooler). I also went in half with Rotortuner on some bitchin' fender flares. They are pretty extreme so I'm not sure when and if I will put them on. I know it's rare enough already, but to tell you the truth, I don't like the look of a stock SP. I'd much rather take the look of a clean 72-75 over an SP. On the SP, the bumpers are horrible, the tail lights are just as bad, I'm not much of a fan of the factory snowplow spoiler (mine is more of the early style GT type, not normally molded on), and the graphics kit is marginal. I think I'm going to have that redone when the body and paint are done. My car was just the first one I could find that wasn't a TOTAL wreck and I did pay too much for it. But in all reality, I'm happy with it. Even though my rigged together ignition ***** with me constantly, the brakes suck (not to mention a wheel cylinder exploded on me so I don't have brakes now), the suspension is aweful, fixing the rust has given me a hacking cough, and I'm constantly driving a calico clown car... I couldn't be happier with it. In the carbed mildly ported form the car presently has, I can destroy most of the other peoples cars in my town who are young and poor like me. Also, I get lots of comments from ex-rx3 owners around my town "I had 7 of those ******' cars. Ran like bats out of hell. Went through 24 motors, 4 rear ends, 18 trannies..." Old school just fits my character better and nothing that bothers me can't be upgraded to not bother me
thanks
steve

rock the old school

that is a nice little ride. I would love to have one of those. They're crazy little muscle car look alikes. And by lookalike I mean that they look damn cool and I only wish I was cool enough to drive one so I could confuse people even more than when I drive my 86' N/A. I like the stock look, but the front effects are nice. And don't change the paint! It's cool as is.
