My f'glass RX2 projects
My f'glass RX2 projects
I've been gathering parts for my vintage RX2 racecar for about a year and I finally had enough stuff to make the piles back into a car. I've been working on some molds for the parts we are allowed to replace in SVRA and HSR so I don't wreck good stock pieces any more than I have to if the car gets bumped on the track. Here are a couple shots of my deck lid. Hood is next.
At this point I'm making molds for my own use on the race car. If I think the final part quality is good enough I may offer them for street cars. If you notice on the deck lid the front edge doesn't have the lip like the sides. The way the stock one is shaped it would take a two piece mold to be able to get the part out of the mold. The lip helps hold to the seal in place and I don't need a seal. The other issue is the extra support on the underside to hold the part to the stock hinges. I can make a mold to do a frame to hold the hinges and latches but it will be after I get the hood skin mold done.
Its an old SCCA B Sedan car that also ran in a few RS races in IMSA in the 70's. They didn't allow f'glass when they were newer but the sanctioning bodies know these parts are getting scarce so they allow it on the Grp. 3 and Grp. 8 cars. IIRC the GTU cars run in Grp. 6 with a lot of big HP cars. If I want to build a P port it might be fun to run there but kind of scary to have a 600hp Camaro coming down on you.
B Sedan rules were very close to the original IT prep level. A lot of the interior had to be there etc. They let us lose the interior now and we can use lexan for all the glass. Many of the cars that ran in the Trans Am 2.5 challenge series were BS cars in the amatuer racing classes.
