Mazda 1600/616

In my junkyard tour today, I found a Mazda with the "tooth" in the middle of the grill and 1600 badge to the right of the tooth. On both sides of the rear quarter panels was a badge that said Mazda 616. It was made in 1971. Looks similiar to a RX2 except its piston engine and the lack of front side markers. The tailights are also different than the 72 RX2 . Is this car good for parts for a early RX2?

Most everything is the same between the two cars except the the items you noted. It probably has the real "vented" hood also if it is a '71. The door panels will not have the carpet strip on the bottom edge as on the Rx-2 either. In 1972 Mazda increased the displacement of the engine to 1800cc and called it the Mazda 618 which is pretty rare in the states. I think it is the same engine used in the Ford Courier.

Mazda 616

John, thanks for the info I needed. Someone took out the front seats, but everything else seems to be there. Hullie, I intend to find out about price for the whole vehicle-if the yard owner will sell. At this point I am in the process of tearing my RX2 apart to get ready for the body shop and I need quite a few things for this project. The 616 is in better shape than my 2. Jeff

I remember reading somewhere that the 616 in automatic trim came with a 4.10 limited slip rear end. I could be wrong on this fact too, but I believe the manual had a limited slip 3.90 in it.

Question

AFAIK no Mazda came out with LSD during 70's especially not piston powered ones.

LSD was always part of the performance catalouge but never an option as mudflaps metallic paint LSD etc...

Your earliest LSD was the 83 GSL, IIRC. It also happens to be the ONLY (of the RX-7s, anyway) chunk to fit with our older, smaller splines. I have an 83 LSD chunk, but they're hard to find.

BTW, does that 616 have a good windshield? If so, I'm interested.

Almost right. The GSL (w/ disc brakes and LSD) appeared in the 1981 model year.

The car is own and built by a friend of mine. Pics show how he went from a wreck to a pristine example!

Hey repujeff, if you have the chance to grab the turn signal cluster off that car I need one. I assume it's all the same as a RX-2. Mine works but it's missin the little horn pin so my horn doesn't work.

Thanks,
Mike

I thought the 81-82 GSL didn't have an LSD. In any event, it's only the S2 cars (81-83) that have the small-splined LSD. You can also use the rear discs on our cars without much trouble.
