I want to buy this rx2. What do you think?

Hello,

I have never owned any RX2 but lately I've been seriously considering buying one to restore. After having a few slip threw my hands on e-bay. I found this one. The inside is in fair shape, some cracks on dashboard and front seats. All the badges and interior seems to be there (sorry no pis of the inside). It has been sitting for 4 years. It has a 13b with headers. The only thing it needs is to connect the hydraulic hose of the transmission. My questions are 1) Is the transmission hose a easy fix, 2) will the engine still be good after sitting for so long, 3) how much is it worth and were would I start to try to get this car on the road again. I appreciate your thoughts and suggestions.
Thanks,
Washington

Transmission hose? you must be referring to the clutch slave cylinder. Thats an easy fix. However, what about the clutch assembly, tranny, 2-piece driveshaft (u-joints) and rear end.

With the engine, its questionable. Why did he let it sit for so long. I suspect blown motor.

You better have a good cash reserve to get it back in ok condition. In other words, give me the seller's name and number so I can get more info on this duece.

I suspect the same thing about the motor. As for the slave cylinder for the transmission, that is it. How would I go about to test the engine before buying?

It looks pretty beat up, but seems to be a worthy enough project. I would check for rust around ALL the window seals. I don't think there is any way to test an engine that has been sitting for 4 years.

I would offer the guy 500 bucks straight up, and go by 50 dollars until he bites.

Good Luck!

Plan on the engine being a write off from the start from the looks of the condition of the engine bay. If you want to do a compression test, in my sig line is a link to the online FSMs. Download the 85 or 87 edition for a better detailed proceedure on how to perform the test. Turn the engine over by hand first to see if it will even rotate and don't get your hopes up. You will need to squirt some motor oil in the carb, turn the engine over at least 6 full revolutions to spread the lube around. If the engine won't turn over by hand, don't force it.

A dead motor will give you a better bargaining position. If it's still subject to CA emmisions, it won't pass with the aftermarket carb and headers.

If Wacky would speak up, he could probably give you a better idea what it's worth than anyone else here, if he didn't want it for himself, lol. If the body rust isn't bad and you can do most of your own mechanical, interior work, along with body and paint prep, plan on at last 5k without paint to bring it back. If you farm out most of the work 10-15k+ to have it done right. Not trying to scare you off, but proper restoration work is labor intensive and expensive. Good lick with it.

Really, he is pretty firm on $2000. I would give to him that if he got it running.

In that condition, that car is worth no more than 500 bucks IMO. I paid 2000.00 for my rx2 and it has hardly any rust and the body is straight and I drove it home. From those pics you posted it looks like it has a lot of rust and the engine does not look promising. It depends on how the engine and trans. and interior are, but the shell looks pretty bad with rust.

Yeah, I agree $2000 is a little steep. Was the engine exposed to the elements like that for 4 years? It almost looks as bad off as my sedan that had been sitting for 17 years, heh. It is suspicious why it was left like that, with stuff half finished and unconnected. Probably something up with the engine.

I don't know. If the seller cleaned it up really well he could probably get 2K for it. Whether the car is $500 or $2000 though, is really irrelevant, as you are going to spend another 6K-12K to restore it. The question really should be, can you find another one in better condition because you are going to spend the money.

$2600 got me a running driving Duece, albeit needing work.

600-800 is what I would pay for that.

That deuce looks hella beat-up. I concur with the other guys paying only 500 max for it. Otherwise, if you're patient enough, you'll find another one with a running motor that's in better condition at your price range. Good luck with it.

I want to thank everybody who made any comments. I think I need to be patient to see if another deuce comes on the block. Or ask for the repairs to be done before I buy. I thinks it needs a little TLC and I am up for the challenge of the resurrection of this rx2.

Damn! You scored on that one. A really nice all original, unmodified, and a running RX-3, yes really hard to find in that condition.
Good find man!

I'd agree that he's asking too much. For what it's worth, the carb and intake might be worth some cash if you'd rather go Holley or Nikki. If it's a DHLA48, it's worth $400 for the carb alone, especially with good jetting. I always did love those carbs.

Yeah, challenge the guy to get it running. If nothing else, he might do some of the legwork for you, only to find out that the motor's a lost cause. You might find that he cleaned the car up and freed the motor, only to come down to a reasonable price.

They're hard enough to find that you don't want to burn any bridges and **** him off, but it's not worth 2k as it sits.
