Help give me more info on RX-5/Cosmo tranny

Ok guys, I bought this tranny a little while ago from a guy locally that said he pulled it out of his Cosmo (RX-5) From what I have been told it is a five speed and serial number is 39065. Anybody could shed some light???? I heard this was the same tranny as a RX-3SP is that true?????????

Here are some pics, excuse the mess.

that looks similar to my SP but let me confirm it. Also, IIRC, the cosmo tranny has a breather pipe near the tailshaft. I will check on that and the part #

If it came from an Rx5/Cosmo it is a 5speed there were no 4speeds offered, it will bolt right in now the gearing i would have to check on and see if it is the same i have the book somewhere just not right here one thing to be aware of is that the speedo gear may be different. also make sure you use the Rx3 shifter not the cosmo one as they are different.

Its great to hear from you to Jerry, I didn't connect the dots prior. I used an Rx7 shifter (79-80) in an Rx4 and didn't work really well, it might work better in an Rx3 though as the center console is different, the Rx4 shifter might be a little too tall (long) though. The other note for you is I think if memory serves me correctly the ratios in the Cosmo tranny are closer than any of the other trannies (now of course this info came from our brothers down under so i am not 100% sure) All i know for certain is I liked the ratios in the cosmo 5speeds i have driven. drop me an email if you want to chat lots of new things going on including a new building for me. (8000sq ft)

Jerry

that's 8000sq ft enclosed with an additional 4000sq side storage covered no sides on 3 acres. it has taken me a long time. the funny thing is you know me i haven't posted here very often and most of the guys here have no clue as to all the stuff i have.

BTW i almost have a complete collection of the rx3 coupes now only missing 72, we are up to 4 R100s not all are buildable, i have a 1200 pu (converting to r100 like rotary) and 1200 wagon same story.

Damn, stop the torture! You are literally making me get into cardiac arrest. You know that I retired from the Army and I have to take it easy because life expectancy is not too many years after that.

For those who don't know Rotarydude, he is a master and sensei to all the rotaries. When you have one, he has five of them, so it's not easy to impress him! I will come down one day to see your museum of cars and trucks!

Cool pictures, I believe I have the 1162 secondary number???? Another thing I noticed is that I don't have a drain plug in the bottom of the pan, WTF is up with that????? It hasn't been welded, it looks factory and it look like it's been there for awhile. Have you seen a tranny without the drain plug like that??????

No bottom drain plug on yours but I guess you have to use the one between the main body and tailshaft.

Yes Jerry i am interested in that Cosmo very interested, sounds really funny but i know that i need that particular Cosmo for my collection. Not just because of the mileage either.

WR. I believe you are right on the Tranny ID, I can't be 100% for certain because all of the 5speeds look very very similar I will try to get underneath my cosmos, Rx4s, Repus and Rx3 and see if i can see the actually differences, i believe you are right though based on several things Most importantly these facts.... with the Cosmo/rx4/Repu being heavier this would cause more heat buildup in the tranny, to combat this logic would be to create more cooling fins on the cover plate as evidenced on the "cosmo" tranny also to prevent excessive pressure buildup from expanding lubricants etc the breather tube. Last thing to notice is on the bell housing itself (TOP), there is a spot for an inspection plug i know that i have seen these on Rx4s i have done and there is one on my j-spec Cosmo as well.

You know what? This is weird because I must have a basket case for a tranny. I don't have the drain plug and I don't have the inspection cover either.
