This is getting overwhelming

man, im so confused right now lol i was just checkin out mazdatrix and trying to kind of get the feel for what im going to need to do a basic rebuild on a tII 13b and get it set up for v mount intercooler and standalone. First off i cant see how a stud kit of all things can cost 450+ dollars it just makes no sense. Rotary parts just seem way more marked up than piston motors, but then again i can see them being more expensive because of there just being less rotarys out there than piston motors. Anyways thats not the point of this thread.

I need some direction guys. I cant figure this stuff out for some reason, its probably the fact that i dont know **** about rotaries and what i need to do a base rebuild on the motor. I know i need new apex seals and stuff. I really should search for this but im just having so much trouble understanding all this coming from working on piston motors. Its so foreign to me.

Well the plan is to swap the 13bt into my starlet, i am going to have to make custom motor mounts, cut trans tunnel (most likely), ford explorer rear end.

I want to run a v mount intercooler i think unless you guys think that it would be overkill. I just want to know if im thinking on the correct track here.

What else am i going to need to do to the motor to get it to where i want it to be. Lets say theoretically that the motor is in great condition when i get it and it can easily go another 20k miles without needing a rebuild. What else would you guys reccomend to do to bump it to 350whp and keep it reliable and good for dd. I was told i could do it with just a standalone and some basic boltons with good tuning. I need to sit down with someone for a day and just talk motors and all the different options i have because im so lost with this right now that there is no way i am going to be able to figure it out lol. Trying to learn this stuff is like trying learn how to walk all over again.

If this has been asked like a million times just let this die and ill keep searching for that elusive thread that is going to turn the lightbulb on in my head

lol as soon as i open my fat mouth

Hello Castratikron

Welcome to the rotary world!

I understand your frustration, I been into VW's for 23 years and decided to switch to Rotaries then I realized how much there's to learn.

I spend the next 6 months reading and am still learning!

Not sure if you got this links, just in case, more reading material.

http://www.vintagerotaries.org/index.php?act=idx

http://www.nopistons.com/forums/index.php?

http://www.ausrotary.com/

and about the price for parts....the fact they are unique and the demand it not too high, I believe that's why parts are some expensive.

But that's what I like about it, people stared and have no idea what kind of car it is and when you pop the hood they are just lost!!

Welcome and good luck on your project. Like Castra said there is plenty to learn on a rotary but quite frankly they are pretty simple engines with only 3 movable parts in them there is not much too them or even to rebuild. If you have rebuilt a piston engine then you can easily rebuild a rotary. It is worthwhile to get the rebuild and porting dvd's out on the market right now- you will learn alot about them. If your not mechanically enclined then it all boils down to what you want and what your wallet will allow. Sky's the limit if money isn't a factor.

Back to your question. If your rotors, housings, bearings, e-shaft are all good then you can just get the basic rebuild kit. It all depends on what apex seals and springs you want to use and can afford. I don't recommend the complete rebuild kit because you don't have to use all the seals and gaskets in the kit unless you plan to rebuild the engine into stock form with all the emission crap, etc. Since it looks like you're putting this into a Starlet, emissions isnt a factor so you can get by with buying- New oil control seals and springs- always replace these, water seals. Stationary gear o-rings. You can reuse them but for the money I would just get new corner seals and springs and side seals and springs. Intake and exhaust gasket. You can seal the oil pan and front cover with a good ATV. That is pretty much it. If I missed something guys let me know. Like I said get the rebuild DVD and it shows all the seals, etc needed and how to replace them and for 25 bucks it is well worth it.

thanks alot guys i've been doing a lot of research the past few days, its only overwhelming because its like learning to walk again you know. Piston motors are so different and in some ways simpler and in most ways much more complicated. I know i wont have a problem with the physical rebuild its just that im a super **** planner and b4 i buy even one single part i like to know EXACTLY what i am going to have to buy barring any unforseen circumstances which always do come up. Thats why its so hard right because i am trying to get this build to about 90% planned out so that when i do have the money in another couple of months i dont get surprised by a bunch of **** that i forgot that i needed or didnt know.

That helps alot im glad i found that rebuild thread as it tells me what parts i can reuse if they look ok and what parts must absolutely be replaced. That way i can save some money on parts. Im not going for crazy power because the car weighs 1500 pounds 350whp is going to be plenty scary for me.

I appreciate the help guys.
