Furb: Mazda 929 coupe 1975

hi guys, this is my new project...

i find myself getting somewhat closer to what i wanted to achieve with the FC, so i was just looking around a bit for something on the side. for quite some time now i have been fascinated about the older RX models, like Clive's awesome RX4!
BUT, un fortunately, i don't have the cash to buy a good example of do a restauration. i spent it all on the FC already
there are some RX models for sale in belgium, but his prices are insane!

one day i was looking on pistonheads and found this 929 and thought: DAMN, thats exactly like the RX-4
i was sold right then and arranged everything for the trip. the car was in Scotland, near Edinburgh. that would be 2300km from where i live in Holland! we spent 29hrs driving in 2 days...

history on the car:
the car is from 75 and has seen 3 owners, and the last owner has just driven it for maybe 100miles..
in 1992 he started the refurb, and that took about a year to complete.
the egine was fine, 78.000miles. only the rear quarters were rusted, so they fitted a new pair of OEM panels and some other minor work.
the car has been resprayed completely and has been in storage ever since.
there are some minor flaws, like the chromed emblems which need rechroming. there is a slight tear in the drivers seat and a little dent in the rear bumper.

plans with this car are not too drastic, the car is way too nice for that.
just some nice wheels, needs a bit lowering, i want to put on my old stock 4-pot calipers of the TII and orcourse in the end, put in a 13B on Carb or ITB's

enough talk... PICS!

The 929's are basically the same as the Rx-4 only with a piston engine. That is a beautiful car. I can't wait until mine is that clean.

its been a while...

last year i had to replace all the brakes because it was just no good, but thats all sorted now! got the car cleaned, polished and waxed, looking good

for the first time since i had the car i have taken it out for a long drive, over 200km from home so that was pretty exciting!
the car has held up perfect, engine runs very smooth and surprisingly it has more than enough power for overtaking.

i wonder how much people have pulled a muscle looking at it on the road, lots of thumbs up and smiles. from grannies to guys in beefed up imprezas

this car makes me relax way more than my 400hp FC, how odd is that

Been a while since last update.. well, thats because there is no real update
Just been driving and enjoying it!

But i must say that the thought of converting to rotary is playing in my mind more and more.. the factory engine is actually low on mileage (83000) but is starting to need maintenance badly.
Parts are hard to come by, thus the the idea of upgrading to newer (and in my opinion: superior) technology is getting more viable..

The ultimate plan will be a N/A 3rotor, but i'll probably start out with a 13b.
but if i plan on doing this it will be done in stages, because i want everything legal. Get it registred as a rotary (which will exempt the car from smog test) with a higher hp engine.
With a classic it should be fairly easy..

This is still in the research stage, not sure yet if this will ever go into any stage of fabrication. Although a complete re-wire, wire-tuck and upgraded brakes/suspension are things that can be done anyways, even if i should chose not to convert it.

Because IF i would choose to go all-out with this, the FC has got to go to create funds.. big sacrifice, but if i can replace it with a 20b N/A 929/rx4 it would be worth it

Would be a shame to sell it, but my heart is starting to lie more with classics instead of sportcars. Its also been a learning curve, because this was my first car, but sometimes i get the feeling i exceeded my goals and over-engineered it (since i do not have the funds to race the car anymore)

I need to work out everything that needs to be done, so i will know what i am getting in to. Especially the legal part will be an issue to adress, and will probably be the main reason wether or not this will ever become reality

If anybody has some input towards the fabrication part, what parts are easy to use (like the 85 rx-7 rear-end with LSD and disc brakes) it would be more then welcome!
